Primary laryngeal aspergillosis in immunocompetent patients is rare. We describe a case of a 59-year-old woman with laryngeal aspergillosis thought to be secondary to long-term inhaled fluticasone therapy. Laryngeal aspergillosis may be an underrecognized complication of inhaled corticosteroid therapy.
The urogenital tract is a rare origin of laryngeal metastasis; transitional cell carcinoma with laryngeal metastases had never been reported previously. In this paper, we describe the clinical and pathological characteristics, evolution, and treatment of the first reported case of a laryngeal metastasis of a TCC followed by a brief review of the literature.
Introduction Thickening or oedema of the vocal cords and myxoedematous infiltration of the laryngeal submucosa may be responsible for the laryngeal symptoms of myxoedema in some patients, but respiratory difficulty due to laryngeal obstruction is extremely rare as a complication of myxoedema. If, however, upper respiratory tract infection is superimposed on a myxoedematous larynx an acute emerg...
In contrast to infantile laryngeal hemangiomas, adult laryngeal hemangiomas are very rare and differ from infantile ones in location of the lesion and symptoms. We report a rare adult laryngeal hemangioma located in supraglottis causing hoarseness. After excision by direct microlaryngoscopy, patient had improved voice and no recurrence in 4 months.
The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an ingenious supraglottic airway device that is designed to provide and maintain a seal around the laryngeal inlet for spontaneous ventilation and allow controlled ventilation at modest level of positive pressure [1]. Successful insertion of LMA requires sufficient depth of anaesthesia and depression of airway reflexes to avoid gagging, coughing and laryngeal ...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) of the larynx is a rare tumor. The aim of this study was to report the CT and MR features of laryngeal NHL in four patients to determine if there are any features that might be helpful to distinguish NHL from other laryngeal tumors. METHODS The CT and MR images of four patients with laryngeal NHL were retrospectively reviewed for tumor volume ...
OBJECTIVE The excision of laryngeal papillomas poses a great challenge for both the anesthesiologist and the surgeon. The narrowness of the airways and the great variability of the pathological lesions necessitate close collaboration between the surgical and anesthesia teams to provide optimal operating conditions and ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation. Our aim was to explore periopera...
Importance It has been debated whether a link exists between laryngeal cancer and asbestos exposure. Prior systematic reviews have been conducted on this topic, but no updates have been performed on the most recent literature since 2000. Objective To provide an updated systematic review of the association between laryngeal cancer and asbestos exposure. Evidence Acquisition A search of elect...
BACKGROUND MicroRNA (miRNA) is an emerging subclass of small non-coding RNAs that regulates gene expression and has a pivotal role for many physiological processes including cancer development. Recent reports revealed the role of miRNAs as ideal biomarkers and therapeutic targets due to their tissue- or disease-specific nature. Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a major cause of cancer-related morta...
