Late-life depression (LLD) has been associated with both generalized and focal neuroanatomical changes including gray matter atrophy and white matter abnormalities. However, previous literature has not been consistent and, in particular, its impact on the topology organization of brain networks remains to be established. In this multimodal study, we first examined cortical thickness, and applie...

There are assumptions that leg length discrepancy (LLD) may cause low back pain (LBP) by creating pelvic obliquity and lumbar scoliosis, although the exact means by which LLD causes or augments LBP is not clear. While it is evident individuals with LLD display compensatory movements in the lower limbs and pelvis, there is a scarce research regarding the effects of LLD on spinal motion. In this ...

There have been numerous efforts to improve the performance of graphene-based electronic devices by chemical doping. Most studies have focused on gas-phase doping with chemical vapor deposition. However, that requires a complicated transfer process that causes undesired doping and defects by residual polymers. Here, we report a solid-phase synthesis of doped graphene by means of silicon carbide...

We report a method to improve the performance of polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) thin-film transistors (TFTs) via pressure-induced nucleation (PIN). During the PIN process, spatial variation in the local solidification temperature occurs because of a non-uniform pressure distribution during laser irradiation of the amorphous Si layer, which is capped with an SiO2 layer. This leads to a four-fold i...

The ability of photon to thermal conversion on wet chemically synthesized gold nanorods (GNRs) is a unique advantage to explore specific local heating. In this study, we demonstrate the thermal response of a single patterned GNR cluster in aqueous solution under near infrared irradiation. To improve the properties of GNRs, such as solubility, we describe the initiated chemical vapor deposition ...

Irradiation with intense ultraviolet laser pulses induced a large refractive-index change in 30GeO2-70SiO2 waveguide-grade thin films prepared by the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method, which contained a large amount of photoactive Ge2+ defects. The maximum index change in the as-deposited films by KrF and XeF excimer laser irradiation was estimated to be 1.2 x 10(-3) and 0.28 x 1...

A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate irradiated by a far off-resonance laser has long-range interatomic correlations caused by laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions. These correlations, which are tunable via the laser intensity and frequency, can produce a "roton" minimum in the excitation spectrum--behavior reminiscent of the strongly correlated superfluid liquid He II.

Late-life depression (LLD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) are associated with medial temporal lobe structural abnormalities. However, the hippocampal functional connectivity (HFC) similarities and differences related to these syndromes when they occur alone or coexist are unclear. Resting-state functional connectivity MRI (R-fMRI) technique was used to measure left and right HFC ...

Protein micropatterns have applications in fundamental life sciences and clinical medicine. In this work, we present a new technique to create 2-D protein micropatterns by local activation of a thin film of thermoresponsive plasma-deposited poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (ppNIPAM) using a computer-controlled infrared laser beam. While the whole substrate is exposed to the protein solution, protein...
