1 I n t r o d u c t i o n With ever increasing demands placed on precision and reliability within manufacturing and research environments, magnetic levitation systems are finding increased utilization within such applications as machine tooling due to their non-contact (i .e. , low friction) force exertion and their capability for active at tenuation of mechanical vibrations. However, magnetic ...

A simple, yet powerful magnetic-levitation-based device is reported for real-time, label-free separation, as well as high-resolution monitoring of cell populations based on their unique magnetic and density signatures. This method allows a wide variety of cellular processes to be studied, accompanied by transient or permanent changes in cells' fundamental characteristics as a biological material.

This paper presents the derivation of the model for a high-precision positioning system using magnetic levitation, which is achieved by an arrangement of Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motors. LQR set-point stabilization is performed as an introduction to the more advanced nonlinear control design presented in [9].

A new simple arrangement how to demonstrate diamagnetic levitation is presented. It uses pencil lead levitating in a track built from neodymium magnets. This arrangement can also be used as a classroom experiment. S Online supplementary data available from stacks.iop.org/PhysED/51/014001/mmedia IOP

Horowitz’ linear time invariant equivalent method for quantitative feedback design is successfully applied to achieve robust tracking performance on a non-linear magnetic levitation system. The system is used for teaching and demonstrating control system design. This paper reports on the application in the form of a tutorial.

A longstanding goal in biomedical research has been to create organotypic cocultures that faithfully represent native tissue environments. There is presently great interest in representative culture models of the lung, which is a particularly challenging tissue to recreate in vitro. This study used magnetic levitation in conjunction with magnetic nanoparticles as a means of creating an organize...
