This project will explore the application of graphbased algorithms to identifying predominant word senses. The hypothesis is that graph-based algorithms, by considering indirect relationships between words, will be more effective at identifying the predominant senses of words than approaches which only consider a word’s immediate context.

The problems of e cacy estimation in noise cancelling by a neural net (LIN-Lateral Inhibition Net [5]) and the use of this information in weighting matching algorithms are focused. Since the e ect of noise on the speech signal is variable and the backpropagation training algorithm is essentially stochastic (most common patterns have more in uence in the weights re-estimation process), it is rea...

We study a variant of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm [ E. Farhi, J. Goldstone, and S. Gutmann, arXiv:1411.4028] with slightly different parametrization and different objective: rather than looking for a state which approximately solves an optimization problem, our goal is to find a quantum algorithm that, given an instance of MAX-2-SAT, will produce a state with high overlap wit...

Using proteomic selection, functional verification, and clinical validation, we identified specific down-regulation of Lin-7C/VELI3/MALS-3 (Lin-7C), which marks oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) metastasis. Despite a rarity of sequence variations in the Lin-7C gene in both primary OSCC and OSCC-derived cells, a high prevalence of hypermethylation was detected in the CpG island region that str...

Linarin (LIN), a flavonoid which exerts both anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects, has been found to promote osteogenic differentiation. However, the molecular mechanism of its effect on osteoblast differentiation was unclear. In the present study, LIN from Flos Chrysanthemi Indici (FCI) was isolated in order to investigate the underlying mechanisms of LIN on MC3T3-E1 cells (a mouse oste...

The heterochronic genes lin-4, lin-14, lin-28, and lin-29 specify the timing of lateral hypodermal seam cell terminal differentiation in Caenorhabditis elegans. We devised a screen to identify additional genes involved in this developmental timing mechanism based on identification of mutants that exhibit temporal misexpression from the col-19 promoter, a downstream target of the heterochronic g...

Wnt proteins are intercellular signals that regulate various aspects of animal development. In Caenorhabditis elegans, mutations in lin-17, a Frizzled-class Wnt receptor, and in lin-18 affect cell fate patterning in the P7.p vulval lineage. We found that lin-18 encodes a member of the Ryk/Derailed family of tyrosine kinase-related receptors, recently found to function as Wnt receptors. Members ...

Mutations in the C. elegans gene lin-44 lead to reversals in the polarity of certain asymmetric cell divisions. We have discovered that lin-44 is a member of the Wnt family of genes, which encode secretory glycoproteins implicated in intercellular signaling. Both in situ hybridization experiments using lin-44 transcripts and experiments using reporter constructs designed to mimic patterns of li...

The Caenorhabditis elegans heterochronic gene pathway, which consists of a set of regulatory genes, plays an important regulatory role in the timing of stage-specific cell lineage development in nematodes. Research into the heterochronic gene pathway gave rise to landmark microRNA (miRNA) studies and showed that these genes are important in stem cell and cancer biology; however, their functions...
