Mammalian vocalizations exhibit large variations in their spectrotemporal features, although it is still largely unknown which result from intrinsic biomechanical properties of the larynx and which are under direct neuromuscular control. Here we show that mere changes in laryngeal air flow yield several non-linear effects on sound production, in an isolated larynx preparation from horseshoe bat...
This paper examines the degree of correlation between lip and jaw con guration and speech acoustics. The lip and jaw positions are characterised by a system of measurements taken from video images of the speaker's face and pro le, and the acoustics are represented using line spectral pair parameters and a measure of RMS energy. A correlation is found between the measured acoustic parameters and...
We investigate the non-gaussian properties of cosmic-string-seeded linear density perturbations with cold and hot dark matter backgrounds. These perturbations are computed using high-resolution numerical simulations with a dynamic range extending from before the radiation-matter transition through to deep into the matter era. We compute the one-point probability density function of the resultin...
This work is concerned with extracting straight lines in SAR image areas for application of urban analysis. The methodology combines the Hough transform and the line detectors algorithms proposed in Tupin et al. [2] to extract the main axes in road networks. A real SAR image is used to test the proposed algorithm.
The transient evolution of perturbations to steady lubrication flow over a topographically patterned surface is investigated via a nonmodal linear stability analysis of the non-normal disturbance operator. In contrast to the capillary ridges that form near moving contact lines, the stationary capillary ridges near trenches or elevations have only stable eigenvalues. Minimal transient amplificat...
In this paper, three systems for classification of stress in speech are proposed. The first system makes use of linear short time Log Frequency Power Coefficients (LFPC), the second employs Teager Energy Operator (TEO) based Nonlinear Frequency Domain LFPC features (NFD-LFPC) and the third uses TEO based Nonlinear Time Domain LFPC features (NTD-LFPC). The systems were tested using SUSAS (Speech...
During the last decade of the 20 Century the concept of Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) has been established and evolved from rather simple land-based systems to more sophisticated, real-time multi-tasking and multi-sensor systems, operational in land and airborne environments. Mobile Mapping technology has made remarkable progress, notably expanding its use in remote sensing, and surveying and ma...
The present study explores if EEG spectral parameters can discriminate between healthy elderly controls (HC), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) using. We considered EEG data recorded during normal clinical routine with 114 healthy controls (HC), 114 AD, and 114 VaD patients. The spectral features extracted from the EEG were the absolute delta power, decay from lower to higher...
Active contour models are used extensively in image processing applications, including edge detection, shape modelling, segmentation and in general to detect object boundaries. They are curves defined in the image domain that can move under the influence of internal forces within the curve itself and external forces derived from the image data. Many versions and improvements have been proposed ...
