We administered oral ibandronate (once a month) to 7 children (6 boys) with low bone mineral density and prevalent low energy fractures. We observed a significant increase (17%) in bone density after one year and additional 3% increase after second year. No further fractures occurred.
Osteoporosis (ie, low bone mineral density) is common in ankylosing spondylitis, related to both systemic inflammation and decreased mobility. Vertebral fracture risk is increased; acute back pain in these patients is not always a flare-up of the disease, as it can be related to bone complications. Intervertebral disc fractures in the ankylosed spine are associated with severe neurological comp...
OBJECTIVES A longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the relationships of the change in radius bone mineral density for seven years with lifestyle, body measurement data and laboratory data. METHODS The subjects of this study were 191 female employees working in an LSI manufacturing factory in Japan. Bone mineral density was measured on the radius of their nondominant side using DXA (...
BACKGROUND Persons with unilateral, lower-extremity amputation sometimes develop osteoarthritis in the intact limb. The purpose of this study was to investigate gait mechanics and bone mineral density in unilateral, trans-tibial amputees to test the hypotheses that the intact limb knee and hip will have larger frontal plane net joint moments and bone mineral density than the prosthetic side and...
BACKGROUND/AIMS Calcium and vitamin D malabsorption in coeliac disease predispose to skeletal demineralisation. This study aimed to determine bone mineral density in patients studied in the first year after diagnosis of coeliac disease, and to detect changes in bone mineral density over the subsequent year. METHODS Lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density was measured in 21 adults w...
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between martial arts practice (judo, karate and kung-fu) and bone mineral density in adolescents. METHODS The study was composed of 138 (48 martial arts practitioners and 90 non-practitioners) adolescents of both sexes, with an average age of 12.6 years. Bone mineral density was measured using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry...
BACKGROUND Thalassemia is the most common hereditary anemia and beta thalassemia major is its most severe form. Endocrine abnormalities in thalassemia major are common disturbing complications that need prompt management. The purpose of this study was to determine the endocrine disorders and bone mineral density in patients with major -thalassemia in . METHODS In this cross- sectional study,...
background: revealing data on the role of vitamin d and calcium supplementation in bone health has led some to suggest that vitamin d and calcium treatment could also play a role in protecting bone against microgravity-induced mineral loss. objectives: the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of vitamin d and calcium administration on microscopic and densitometric changes of ...
