Recent reports have demonstrated that human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is associated with other neurological abnormalities in addition to HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). It has been well established that high HTLV-1 proviral loads are associated with the development of HAM/TSP. We now demonstrate, for the first time, to our knowledge, that HTLV-1 p...

We investigated the presence of human T-lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) DNA in the peripheral blood mononuclear cell subsets obtained from 18 patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and HTLV-2, 6 of whom also had predominantly sensory polyneuropathy (PSP). HTLV-2 DNA and RNA were found in CD8- and CD19-positive cells, and, for patients with PSP, in CD14-positive cells as...

MR imaging is the modality of choice for accurate local staging of bladder cancer. In addition, bladder MR imaging helps detect lymph node involvement, and in conjunction with computed tomography, provides complete staging. Familiarity with optimal imaging protocols, normal urinary bladder anatomy, and pathologic MR imaging appearances is essential for the radiologist. Evolving techniques, such...

Significantly higher frequencies of tumor necrosis factor alpha- and interleukin-2-secreting human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-specific CD4(+) T cells were present in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) patients than in those of asymptomatic carriers with similar provirus loads. The data suggest that HTLV-1-speci...

We present a case of human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy, also known as tropical spastic paresis. While the literature has previously described the neuroradiological findings of spinal atrophy and hyperintense T2 lesions involving the cerebral white matter, little information is available about musculoskeletal imaging findings. Our patient demonstrated diffuse...

Neutral buffered Formalin, a fixative used in most pathology laboratories, was found to inactivate human T-lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus. Preparations containing this virus with infectivity titers of greater than 10(5) were treated with 1% or greater neutral buffered Formalin; after treatment, virus was undetectable (titer, less than 10(1)). In addition, when infe...

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a huge problem in the worldwide as well as in Turkey. It has hepatotrophic and lymphotropic capacity, and can cause hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and lymphoma. HCC is the most prevalent primary malignity of liver. Some studies have been reported that HBV is more common in patient with lymphoma. We present a case with lymphoma diagnosed with liver biopsy whi...

We studied the presence of tax and ltr genes from human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) provirus in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 15 seronegative patients with tropical spastic paraparesis or HTLV-I-associated myelopathy by PCR. Only a region of the tax gene from 10 patients was amplified. The nucleotide homologies of six Chilean isolates to the ATK-1 clone ranged betwee...

A new kind of silver micro-dendrites with no surfactants protected has been synthesized for the separation and detection of DNA merely by earth gravity as the density of silver is larger than that of water. Through this approach, the DNA of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) can be detected down to 10 pM with the detection range from 10 pM to 100 nM.

Monkey B-lymphotropic papovavirus (LPV) replicates only in B-lymphoblastoid cells, whereas the LPV mutant 76 (LPV-76) can grow in either B- or T-lymphoblastoid cells. The nucleotide sequence of the wild-type LPV PstI B segment was compared with that of LPV-76 PstI-B, within which the mutation responsible for the extended host range had been located. The VP-1 coding region of LPV-76 was found to...
