In this paper, an all-optical AND logic scheme which exploits the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect in semiconductor-optical-amplifier-assisted Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI), is proposed, performance analyzed and parameters optimized. The proposal is validated and the system performance under various parameters is examined through numerical simulations. With only moderate parameters, ...

A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a plasmonic channel waveguide is proposed for refractive index sensing. The structure, with a small physical footprint of 20 × 120 μm², achieved a high figure of merit of 294. The cut-off frequency behaviour in the plasmonic channel waveguide resulted in a flat dispersion curve, which induces a 1.8 times larger change of the propagation constant for the gi...

We have fabricated optical switches using Si waveguides and phase-change material. The switch is based on an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and thin film Ge2Sb2Te5 is deposited onto the Si waveguides. We observe the change in transmission spectra of the switch by laser pulse irradiations repeatedly. The phase change of the Ge2Sb2Te5 film with only 1-μm-square is sufficient for π-phase ...

We present a stochastic path integral method to calculate the full-counting statistics of conductors with energy conserving dephasing probes and dissipative voltage probes. The approach is explained for the experimentally important case of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, but is easily generalized to more complicated setups. For all geometries where dephasing may be modeled by a single one-channe...

We propose a new class of resonant silicon optical devices, consisting of a ring resonator coupled to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which is passively temperature compensated by tailoring the optical mode confinement in the waveguides. We demonstrate operation of the device over a wide temperature range of 80 degrees. The fundamental principle behind this work can be extended to other photonic...

We present a technique for frequency-resolved wavefront characterization of high harmonics based on lateral shearing interferometry. Tilted replicas of the driving laser pulse are produced by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, producing separate focii in the target. The interference of the resulting harmonics on a flat-field extreme ultraviolet spectrometer yields the spatial phase derivative. A co...

We present a setup for performing sub-shot-noise measurements of the phase quadrature of intense pulsed light without the use of a separate local oscillator. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an unbalanced arm length is used to detect the fluctuations of the phase quadrature at a single sideband frequency. With this setup, the nonseparability of a pair of quadrature-entangled beams is demonstr...

This chapter, first, presents the motivation behind the need for adaptive, highly linear electro-optic modulators and an overview of the different optical linearization approaches of electro-optic modulators. Then, the figures of merits in terms of linearity performance are described and analyzed. Next, the chapter focuses on one excellent linearization approach called interferometric modulator...

In this work we implement a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an image rotator in one of its arms to measure the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum of a partially coherent beam. By measuring the visibility of the interference as a function of the angle of rotation, the OAM distribution can be recovered via a Fourier transform. Theoretical calculations based on the coherent mode decompositio...

An integrated electro-optic waveguide modulator is demonstrated in bulk fused silica. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer waveguide structure is fabricated by direct writing with a femtosecond laser followed by thermal poling. A 20 degrees electro-optic phase shift is achieved at an operating wavelength of 1.55 microm with an applied voltage of 400 V and an interaction length of 25.6 mm, which corres...
