We present an exact calculation for the scattering of light from a single sphere made of a Faraday-active material, into first order of the external magnetic field. When the size of the sphere is small compared to the wavelength the known T-matrix for a magneto-active Rayleigh scatterer is found. We address the issue whether or not there is a so called Photonic Hall Effect-a magneto-transverse ...

Lanthanide metals are a particular class of magnetic materials in which the magnetic moments are carried mainly by the localized electrons of the 4f shell. They are frequently found in technically relevant systems, to achieve, e.g., high magnetic anisotropy. Magnetooptical methods in the x-ray range are well suited to study complex magnetic materials in an element-specific way. In this work, we...

Radiative corrections to the polarizability tensor of isotropic particles are fundamental to understand the energy balance between absorption and scattering processes. Equivalent radiative corrections for anisotropic particles are not well known. Assuming that the polarization within the particle is uniform, we derived a closed-form expression for the polarizability tensor which includes radiat...

We have demonstrated that the ion current resulting from collisions between metastable krypton atoms in a magneto-optical trap can be used to precisely measure the trap loading rate. We measured both the ion current of the abundant isotope 83Kr (isotopic abundance=11%) and the single-atom counting rate of the rare isotope 85Kr (isotopic abundance∼1×10(-11)), and found the two quantities to be p...

Simplified analytic expressions are derived for the optical propagation matrix of magnetic anisotropic Kerr media using the Lagrange–Sylvester interpolation polynomial. This expression is used to investigate magnetic Kerr films in Fabry–Pérot configurations, magneto-optic recording quadrilayers and alternating periodic stacks. It is found that the magneto-optic reflection coefficients are enhan...

The main magnetic characteristics regarding the domain structure and magnetization processes (axial, circular and Matteucci and inverse Wiedemann effects) of amorphous wires and glass-coated microwires are analysed. Magnetic bistability, spontaneously observed in samples with large enough ratio magneto-elastic anisotropy with axial easy axis to shape anisotropy, is the main source for a number ...

The dynamics of a relativistic, hot charged uid is expressed in terms of a hybrid magneto uid eld which uni es the electromagnetic eld with an appropriately dened but analogous oweld. In this uni ed eld, the uid experiences no net force. Suitably modi ed (due to temperature) minimal coupling prescription for particle dynamics may be invoked to a ect the transformation from the oweld (or the ele...

Bismuth-substituted iron garnets are considered to be the most promising magneto-optical materials because of their excellent optical transparency and very high magneto-optical figures of merit in the near-infrared spectral region. However, the practical application of garnets in the visible and short-wavelength infrared parts of spectrum is currently limited, due to their very high optical abs...

Devices formed from magneto-inductive waveguides based on coupled loop resonators are considered using simple analytic theory, initially assuming lossless propagation and nearestneighbour coupling. Two-port devices that were considered include mirrors, Fabry–Perot resonators, Bragg gratings and tapers, while more general N-port devices include power splitters and directional couplers. Condition...

We present an electrodynamical model of a quantum plasmonic device--the magneto-optical (MO) spaser. It is shown that a spherical gain nanoparticle coated with a metallic MO shell can operate as a spaser amplifying circularly polarized surface plasmons. The MO spaser may be used in design of an optical isolator in plasmonic transmission lines as well as in spaser spectrometry of chiral molecules.
