Pesticides such as malathion, commonly used in agriculture and households, are toxic substances that lead to reactive oxygen species generation, which harms organisms. Ecotoxicological consequences of malathion, particularly its effects on antioxidants in fish, are not well understood. Thus, we investigated the effects of malathion (0.05 mg/L) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant systems in Ca...

Three strains of filamentous Cyanobacteria were used to study their growth and utilization of organophosphorus pesticide malathion. A sharp decrease in the growth of the algal strains was observed by increasing the concentration of malathion. Amongst them Nostoc muscorum tolerated different concentrations and was recorded as the highest efficient strain for biodegradation (91%) of this compound...

Abstract Malathion undergoes hydrolysis in aqueous solutions; the products derived from the reaction are dependent upon the pH of the medium. It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the toxicity of the products of malathion hydrolysis in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. The studies were conducted by toxicity bioassays of 96 hr duration and continuous exposure tests of 14 da...

Malathion (ML) is a well known pesticide commonly used in many agricultural and non-agricultural processes. Its toxicity has been attributed primarily to the accumulation of acetylcholine (Ach) at nerve junctions, due to the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The aim of the current research was to study the protective effect of the melissa plant extract against reproductive impairment i...

Static bioassays were performed to observe the toxic effect of malathion to Barbodes gonionotus at 0.0 to 20.0 ppm concentrations. Malathion at 5.0 ppm was harmless to B. gonionotus and concentration above 6.0 ppm were found to be lethal. Malathion at 2.06 ppm was safe for the B. gonionotus.

In this work, elimination two types of organophosphorus pesticides, diazinon and malathion spiked in aqueous solution by ultrasonic irradiation was investigated. Six different initial concentrations of diazinon and malathion (100, 300, 500, 200, 400, and 600 μg/L respectively) at different pH (3, 7, 9) and time (30, 45, 60, 90, 105 min) were investigated. Results showed that diazinon and malath...

We previously reported reduced sperm concentration and motility in fertile men in a U.S. agrarian area (Columbia, MO) relative to men from U.S. urban centers (Minneapolis, MN; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY). In the present study we address the hypothesis that pesticides currently used in agriculture in the Midwest contributed to these differences in semen quality. We selected men in whom all se...
