BACKGROUND Bacterial pneumonia in goats is usually caused by Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida. Another important infection disease in lactating goats is intramammary infection producing mastitis, usually associated with coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. However, treatment of bacterial pneumonia in goats not affected by mastitis problems should be restricted to antimicrobial...

Abstract Two experiments (EXP1 and EXP2) evaluated the effects of NutraGen (NG) on calf health following exposure to bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) d -3 Mannheimia haemolytica (Mh) infection 0. For each EXP, steers (BW = 251 ± 38.2 kg) were randomly allocated 1 3 treatments (TRT). Treatments included a placebo (CON; EXP1 n 5; EXP2 5), fed from -18 followed by NG 28 (CHLG; 6), (PREC; 6; 5). ...

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for detection of bovine serum antibodies to the cytotoxin (leukotoxin) of Pasteurella haemolytica. A partially purified, cytotoxic, and immunogenic protein obtained from supernatants of logarithmic-phase P. haemolytica was used as the ELISA antigen. Preadsorption of sera with various cytotoxic, somatic, and capsular antigen preparations...

Fifty serotyped isolates each of Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica were tested on the API 20E strip (Analytab Products, Plainview, N.Y.), the Oxi/Ferm tube (Roche Diagnostics, Nutley, N.J.), and the Minitek system (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.). None of the rapid test systems reliable identified these organisms. With the API system, discrepancies between expected ...

The ROB-1 beta-lactamase, previously described in Haemophilus influenzae, has been found in the genus Pasteurella. In three bovine strains of Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica, ROB-1 production was determined by plasmids of 4.4 kilobases. In one porcine strain of Pasteurella aerogenes, the enzyme seems to be chromosomally encoded.

To determine the density of mast cells (MCs) and the extent of substance P (SP) immunoreactivity during initiation and progression of pneumonic pasteurellosis (PP), 18 lambs were inoculated intrabronchially with Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica or saline, and lung tissue was collected at 1, 15 and 45 days post-inoculation (n=3, each group). Additionally, the left (non-inoculated) contralate...

The prepuces of lambs aged 6--8 months and semen of 2 adult rams were found to be infected with gram negative, non-motile, non-haemolytic, pleomorphic bacilli. These organisms were compared with those of known strains of actinobacillus actinomycetem comitans. Actinobacillus seminis and Pasteurella haemolytica, using the API 20 E classification system. Applying the principles of numerical taxono...

The antibody response to various combined polyvalent Pasteurella haemolytica vaccines was studied in sheep and cattle. In sheep, certain oil adjuvant vaccines gave rise to a better antibody response to P. haemolytica than an A1(OH)3-adsorbed vaccine. This finding, however, was not consistent for all serotypes, and with respect to P. multocida, oil adjuvants had no advantage. Furthermore, it was...
