The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) has been anatomically divided into a number of subregions along its medial–lateral axis, which behavioral research suggests have distinct functions. Recently, evidence emerged suggesting functional diversity is also present the anterior–posterior axis rodent OFC. However, patterns anatomical connections that underlie these differences not well characterized. Here,...
Eyeblink conditioning (EBC) was used in the current study to examine the mechanisms underlying the ontogeny of associative motor learning in rats. Eyeblink conditioning emerges ontogenetically between postnatal day 17 (P17) and P24 in rats. Previous studies used electrical stimulation to show that the ontogeny of EBC is influenced by developmental changes in input from the medial auditory thala...
Neonatal inhibition of brain estrogen formation in male rats by administration of the aromatase inhibitor, 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD), permanently changes aspects of their mating behavior and partner preference in adulthood. The medial preoptic area receives chemosensory inputs via a sexually dimorphic vomeronasal projection circuit, which responds to reproductively relevant pheromon...
This study tested the effects of 8 days of subchronic administration of 3,4-methylene dioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) (5 mg/kg b.w.) on preprotachykinin A mRNA levels in discrete rat brain regions. In situ hybridization examined preprotachykinin A mRNA levels in the core and shell of the nucleus accumbens, the islands of Calleja, the olfactory tubercle, the dorsal and ventral caudate-putamen, the b...
The study aimed at testing: (1) whether stereotaxic damage to the hippocampus and amygdala results in a memory deficit, (2) whether the memory functions subserved by the hippocampus are lateralized and (3) whether time limited storage of sensory information is impaired after focal hippocampal and amygdalar lesions. Seven patients with unilateral stereotaxic damage to the anterior part of hippoc...
Within the medial temporal lobe, both the hippocampus and amygdala are frequently targeted by researchers and clinicians for volumetric analysis based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, different data acquisition techniques, analysis software and anatomical boundaries have in the past made it difficult to compare results of MRI studies from different laboratories. In order to reduce ...

Increased dopamine (DA) in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) facilitates male sexual behavior. A major source of innervation to the MPOA is the medial amygdala (MeA). We now report that chemical stimulation of the MeA enhanced levels of extracellular MPOA DA in anesthetized male rats. These results suggest that DA activity in the MPOA can be regulated by input from the MeA to the MPOA.
We recently demonstrated a functional relationship between fMRI responses within the amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex based upon whether subjects interpreted surprised facial expressions positively or negatively. In the present fMRI study, we sought to assess amygdala-medial prefrontal cortex responsivity when the interpretations of surprised faces were determined by contextual experim...
The left hippocampus and related structures mediate verbal memory function. The mechanism underlying preserved verbal memory function in patients with left hippocampal damage is unknown. Temporal lobe epilepsy, a common disease, is frequently the consequence of a characteristic hippocampal pathology termed hippocampal sclerosis, which may also affect the amygdala. In this setting, mapping the s...
