INTRODUCTION Count data are often collected in chronic disease research, and sometimes these data have a skewed distribution. The number of unhealthy days reported in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an example of such data: most respondents report zero days. Studies have either categorized the Healthy Days measure or used linear regression models. We used alternative r...

Clinicians need to predict the number of involved nodes in breast cancer patients in order to ascertain severity, prognosis, and design subsequent treatment. The distribution of involved nodes often displays over-dispersion-a larger variability than expected. Until now, the negative binomial model has been used to describe this distribution assuming that over-dispersion is only due to unobserve...

A simple and quick method of estimating the parameters of the Generalized Negative Binomial Distribution (GNBD) has been suggested. A Monte Carlo technique has been applied to study the unbiasedness and the efficiency of the estimates so obtained. Using this method of estimation the GNBD has been fitted to some observed data and the fits have been found quite satisfactory.

Introduction Selection the appropriate statistical model for the response variable is one of the most important problem in the finite mixture of generalized linear models. One of the distributions which it has a problem in a finite mixture of semi-parametric generalized statistical models, is the Poisson distribution. In this paper, to overcome over dispersion and computational burden, finite ...

Accurate statistical model of PET measurements is a prerequisite for a correct image reconstruction when using statistical image reconstruction algorithms, or when pre-filtering operations must be performed. Although radioactive decay follows a Poisson distribution, deviation from Poisson statistics occurs on projection data prior to reconstruction due to physical effects, measurement errors, c...
