The coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos off nuclei has eluded detection for four decades, even though its predicted cross section is by far the largest of all low-energy neutrino couplings. This mode of interaction offers new opportunities to study neutrino properties and leads to a miniaturization of detector size, with potential technological applications. We observed this process at a 6...
The elastic scattering cross section measured at energies $E\lesssim 10$ MeV/nucleon for some light heavy-ion systems having two identical cores like \oc exhibits an enhanced oscillatory pattern the backward angles. Such a is known to be due transfer of valence nucleon or cluster between cores. In particular, $\alpha$ has been shown originate directly from core-exchange symmetry in scattering. ...
The origins of side scattering from a fibroblast and cervical cell line were determined by comparing side-scatter images with images stained for lysosomes, nuclei, and mitochondria on a cell by cell basis. Lysosomes or nuclei are the most efficient type of scatterer depending on the cell type and incident light polarization. The relative scattering efficiencies of lysosomes and mitochondria wer...
Angle-resolved light scattering spectroscopy of biological cells is investigated in the visible wavelength range. A unified Mie and fractal model is shown to provide an accurate global agreement with light scattering spectra from 1.1 degrees to 165 degrees scattering angles. It is found that light scattering in forward directions (<8 degrees ) is dominated by Mie scattering by the bare cell and...
We present UV imaging polarimetry data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The polarized flux is found to be extended to ∼ 1 kpc from the nucleus, and the position angles of polarization are centrosymmetric, confirming that the polarization is caused by scattering. We determine the location of the hidden nucleus as the center of this centrosymmetric pattern. From ...
2014 Nucleus-nucleus scattering with rearrangement of nucleons between the projectile and target nuclei is discussed. The approximated Watson and Glauber formulae for these collisions are derived. The example of the antisymmetrization term in elastic proton-nucleus scattering is considered. LE JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE TOME 39, OCTOBRE 1978, Classification Physics Abstracts 25.10 25.90 . The theory o...
We investigate the degree to which the scaling functions F (ψ ′) derived from cross sections for inclusive electron-nucleus quasi-elastic scattering define the same function for different nuclei. In the region where the scaling variable ψ ′ < 0, we find that this superscaling is experimentally realized to a high degree.
The nuclear response function measured by inclusive quasielastic electron-nucleus scattering is an important observable in the study of the wave function of the bound nuclear system and the properties of its constituents. In the impulse approximation (lA) it relates the inclusive cross sections to the free electron-nucleon cross sections aep and a en• and to the spectral function 1 p(k, E) whic...
Corrections to the first order term of the multiple scattering expansion of the nucleon-nucleus optical potential due to the propagation of the projectile nucleon in the target nucleus mean field are estimated. The effects of nonlocalities of the nucleon-nucleon transition amplitude are included. Calculations are performed for nucleon scattering from O and Pb at 100, 200, and 400 MeV incident e...
Relativistic exchange current corrections to neutrino–nucleus cross sections are presented assuming non–vanishing strange quark form factors for the constituent nucleons. For charged current processes the exchange current corrections can lower the impulse approximation results by 10% while these corrections are found to be sensitive to both the nuclear density and the strange quark axial form f...
