The S. cerevisiae genome is the most well-characterized eukaryotic genome and one of the simplest in terms of identifying open reading frames (ORFs), yet its primary annotation has been updated continually in the decade since its initial release in 1996 (Goffeau et al., 1996). The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD; www.yeastgenome.org) (Hirschman et al., 2006), the community-designated reposit...

The evolutionary history of the entire Escherichia coli chromosome was traced by examining the distribution of the approximately 4300 open reading frames (ORFs) from E.coli MG1655 among strains of known genealogical relationships. Using this framework to deduce the incidence of gene transfer and gene loss, a total of 67 events-37 additions and 30 deletions-were required to account for the distr...

Complete sets of cloned protein-encoding open reading frames (ORFs), or ORFeomes, are essential tools for large-scale proteomics and systems biology studies. Here we describe human ORFeome version 3.1 (hORFeome v3.1), currently the largest publicly available resource of full-length human ORFs (available at ). Generated by Gateway recombinational cloning, this collection contains 12,212 ORFs, re...

Norovirus (NoV) genogroups I and II (GI and GII) are now recognized as the predominant worldwide cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in humans. Three recombinant NoV GII isolates were identified and characterized, 2 of which are unrelated to any previously published recombinant NoV. Using data from the current study, published sequences, database searches, and molecular techniques, we i...

A rapid multiplex PCR assay was developed to distinguish between North American and European genotypes of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus after a portion of the polymerase gene (open reading frame 1b) was sequenced for two North American PRRS virus strains. DNA products with unique sizes characteristic of each genotype were obtained.

Mycobacterium neoaurum strain VKM Ac-1815D produces 4-androstene-3,17-dione as a major compound from phytosterols. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the strain. The genome consists of a single circular 5,438,190-bp chromosome, with a G+C content of 66.88%, containing 5,318 putative open reading frames (ORFs), 46 tRNAs, and 6 rRNAs. Arrays of cholesterol metabolism genes are random...

Fine tuning of individual enzyme expression level is necessary to alleviate metabolic imbalances in synthetic heterologous pathways. A known approach consists of choosing a suitable combination of promoters, based on their characterized strengths in model conditions. We questioned whether each step of a multiple-gene synthetic pathway could be independently tunable at the transcription level. T...

We determined the genome sequence of the thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus strain NBRC1777. The genome of strain NBRC1777 is composed of 4,912 open reading frames (ORFs) on 8 chromosomes, with a total size of 10,895,581 bp, including mitochondrial DNA.

The draft genome sequence of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex strain Griffin-1, isolated from a red oak tree (Quercus rubra) in Georgia, is reported here. The bacterium has a genome size of 2,387,314 bp, with a G+C content of 51.7%. The Griffin-1 strain genome contains 2,903 predicted open reading frames and 50 RNA genes.

pMF1 is the only autonomously replicating plasmid that has been recently identified in myxobacteria. This study characterized the partitioning (par) system of this plasmid. The fragment that significantly increased the retaining stability of plasmids in Myxococcus cells in the absence of selective antibiotics contained three open reading frames (ORFs) pMF1.21-pMF1.23 (parCAB). The pMF1.22 ORF (...
