PURPOSE To delineate the relationship between the optic nerves and the posterior paranasal sinuses using CT data. METHODS Direct coronal sinus CT scans of 150 consecutive patients with chronic inflammatory sinus disease were reviewed by two radiologists. Axial oblique reconstructions along the course of the optic nerve were obtained for the first 100 patients. The direct relationship between ...

PURPOSE To isolate the rat Myoc/Tigr gene and investigate changes in its expression pattern in normal eyes and in eyes with either pressure-induced optic nerve damage or optic nerve transection. METHODS Expression pattern of the rat Myoc/Tigr gene was investigated by Northern blot hybridization. Optic nerve damage and death of ganglion cells in the retina were induced unilaterally, by injecti...

We present an unusual case of a melanocytoma of the optic disc that showed documented progressive growth over a period of six years. It reached the largest size of any reported optic nerve melanocytoma and the eye was enucleated because of the possibility of malignant degeneration. Optic nerve melanocytomas are locally invasive but are not known to undergo transformation into malignant melanoma...

A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) developed crytpococcal meningitis, complicated by papilledema and severe progressive visual loss despite medical therapy. Bilateral optic sheath fenestration resulted in significant improvement in vision and resolution of papilledema. Histopathologic evaluation of the optic nerve sheath demonstrated numerous cryptococci. Optic nerve sheat...

OBJECTIVE Optic atrophy is a pathological term applied to optic nerve shrinkage from any process that produces degeneration of axons in the anterior visual system (the retino-geniculate pathway). The pathologist can make the diagnosis of optic atrophy by direct observation of the histopathological changes in the optic nerve. The clinician is restricted to indirect evidence by observing the opti...

Evulsion of the optic nerve is an uncommon traumatic event, probably because the intraorbital portion of the optic nerve is mobile and surrounded by sheaths. The present paper reports a case of complete evulsion of the optic nerve with retinal detachment and discusses the possible patho mechanisms involved. Fluorescein angiography showed no retinal circulation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the temporal and spatial changes in the expression of AQP4 and AQP9 in the optic nerve after it is crushed. The left optic nerves of rats were either crushed (crushed group) or sham operated (sham group), and they were excised before, and at 1, 2, 4, 7, and 14 days later. Four optic nerves were pooled for each time point in both groups. The expression ...

AIM Many approaches for optic nerve decompression have their own advantages and disadvantages. The aim of this study was to perform endoscopic decompression of optic nerve through the supraorbital keyhole and evaluate its feasibility. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ten adult cadaveric heads were studied using 4-mm, 0- and 30-degree rigid endoscopes to perform the optic nerve decompression through the s...
