Titanium dioxide is an emerging optical material, with a relatively high refractive index (n ∼ 2), which allows for high confinement of the electromagnetic field. Extensive research has been conducted on the negatively charged nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond due to its robust electronic and optical properties. In particular, its stable room-temperature photoluminescence properties have been ...

We demonstrate that in a hybrid plasmonic system the optical force exerted on a dielectric waveguide by a metallic substrate is enhanced by more than 1 order of magnitude compared to the force between a photonic waveguide and a dielectric substrate. A nanoscale gap between the dielectric waveguide and the metallic substrate leads to deep subwavelength optical energy confinement with ultralow mo...

We have measured nonlinear scattering from plasmons in individual Au nanorods and have correlated second-harmonic activity of Ag nanoparticles and clusters to morphology. The measurements reveal novel ultrafast nonlinear phenomena related to electron confinement. Surprisingly, the coherent plasmon response is suppressed relative to the hot electron response indicating enhanced plasmon dephasing...

Direct laser writing through two-photon polymerization lithography is used to fabricate 3D nanostructures containing aligned single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). SWCNTs are aligned in the laser scanning directions while they are embedded in the structure. The alignment is induced by spatial confinement, volume shrinkage, and the optical gradient force. This method is expected to lead to new a...

Starting from the paraxial wave equation, an analytic expression for filament threshold in fiber lasers is derived. The occurrence of filamentation is determined by the larger of two thresholds, one of perturbative gain and one of spatial confinement. The threshold value is approximately a few megawatts, depending on the parameters of the fiber. © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 060...

We report ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation in high-confinement Si3N4 integrated optical waveguides. The spectrum extends through the visible (from 470 nm) to the infrared spectral range (2130 nm) comprising a spectral bandwidth wider than 495 THz, which is the widest supercontinuum spectrum generated on a chip.

We demonstrate photonic devices based on standard 3C SiC epitaxially grown on silicon. We achieve high optical confinement by taking advantage of the high stiffness of SiC and undercutting the underlying silicon substrate. We demonstrate a 20 μm radius suspended microring resonator with Q=14,100 fabricated on commercially available SiC-on-silicon substrates.

The air/PFO and the buried electrode/PFO interfaces have been investigated by two-color SFG spectroscopy. Due to the interface confinement effects, the planes of PFO rings are nearly parallel to the surface plane, and the optical band gaps become smaller at the interfaces than those of the bulk.

We describe a novel approach for CMOS-compatible passively temperature insensitive silicon based optical devices using titanium oxide cladding which has a negative thermo-optic (TO) effect. We engineer the mode confinement in Si and TiO2 such that positive TO of Si is exactly cancelled out by negative TO of TiO2. We demonstrate robust operation of the resulting device over 35 degrees.

Starting with metal dithiocarbamate complexes, we synthesize colloidal Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS) nanocrystals with diameters ranging from 2 to 7 nm. Structural and Raman scattering data confirm that CZTS is obtained rather than other possible material phases. The optical absorption spectra of nanocrystals with diameters less than 3 nm show a shift to higher energy due to quantum confinement.
