Cerebral malaria is a diffuse encephalopathy associated with seizures and status epilepticus which can occur in up to one-third of patients with severe malaria, particularly that caused by Plasmodium falciparum. In this article, we report three cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria (all adult male patients) complicated by seizures and symptoms of diffuse meningoencephalitis. Two patients had predom...
Objective: To investigate the incidence of mixedspecies (MS) malaria infection, and compare the results with microscopically confirmed cases of malaria. Methods: During 2010, blood spots collected from 371 clinically suspected cases of malaria were microscopically examined in a cross-sectional study. The DNA was extracted from the samples, and a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was perfor...
The diagnostic capacity of three malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), NOW-Malaria-ICT, OptiMAL-IT, and Paracheck-Pf, was evaluated against expert microscopy in Colombia. We tested 896 patients, of whom microscopy confirmed 139 P. falciparum, 279 P. vivax, and 13 mixed P.f/P.v infections and 465 negatives. Paracheck-Pf and NOW-malaria-ICT were more accurate in detecting P. falciparum (sensitiv...
Malaria remains the worlds’ most devastating human parasitic infection, afflicting 500 million people and causing from 1.7-2.5 million deaths each year globally. 4-aminoquinoline drugs are highly effective and rapidly acting agents against asexual erythrocytic stages of malaria parasites mainly P. vivax and P. falciparum responsible for life threatening clinical manifestations and severity of t...
Passive surveillance for malaria cases was conducted in Yunnan Province, China, along the China-Myanmar border. Infection with Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum protozoa accounted for 69% and 28% of the cases, respectively. Most patients were adult men. Cross-border travel into Myanmar was a key risk factor for P. falciparum malaria in China.
Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have now been recommended and brought to field operation by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of two commonly used RDTs; Wondfo and SD Bioline Malaria Pf/Pan for malaria diagnosis in an endemic area of Koraput district, Odisha state. A total of 100 clinically suspected malaria p...
background: our study aimed at substantiating the recent claim of myo-cardial complications in severe malaria by experimentally inducing severe plasmodium falciparum infection in a humanized mouse model employed as human surrogate. methods: twenty five humanized mice were inoculated with standard in vitro cultured p. falciparum and blood extracts collected from the inner cardiac muscles of infe...
abstract background and objectives: plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein-1 (pfmsp-1) is a promising vaccine against malaria during its blood stages which play an important role in immunity to this disease. polymorphic nature of this gene is a major obstacle in making an effective vaccine against malaria. in this study, the genetic diversity of plasmodium falciparum isolates was...
Early diagnosis of malaria for military personnel training in the field is crucial in providing proper treatment for the infected and in taking appropriate preventive measures for the non-infected. Present preliminary diagnosis of malaria in the field depends on the clinical symptoms of the patients and there is a need for rapid diagnosis of malaria in the field. The presence of drug-resistant ...
OBJECTIVE To compare and evaluate the application of indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) for laboratory identification of visceral leishmaniasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum samples from patients with malaria (Plasmodium vivax, n = 86; Plasmodium falciparum, n = 38), brucellosis (n = 26), tuberculosis (n = 31) and typhoid fever (n = 35) were examined fo...
