We report extensive Monte Carlo and event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid composed of particles interacting via hard-sphere interactions complemented by four tetrahedrally coordinated short-range attractive ("sticky") spots, a model introduced several years ago by Kolafa and Nezbeda (Kolafa, J.; Nezbeda, I. Mol. Phys. 1987, 87, 161). To access the dynamic properties of the mod...

We study experimentally the nonequilibrium phase behaviour of a horizontal monolayer of macroscopic rods. The motion of the rods in two dimensions is driven by vibrations in the vertical direction. Aside from the control variables of packing fraction and aspect ratio that are typically explored in molecular liquid crystalline systems, due to the macroscopic size of the particles we are also abl...

Dense particle packing in a confining volume remains a rich, largely unexplored problem, despite applications in blood clotting, plasmonics, industrial packaging and transport, colloidal molecule design, and information storage. Here, we report densest found clusters of the Platonic solids in spherical confinement, for up to [Formula: see text] constituent polyhedral particles. We examine the i...

[1] In this, the first of a pair of papers which address the simulation and automated measurement of well-sorted natural granular material, a method is presented for simulation of two-phase (solid, void) assemblages of discrete non-cohesive particles. The purpose is to have a flexible, yet computationally and theoretically simple, suite of tools with well constrained and well known statistical ...

The postnatal mouse ovary is rich in quiescent and early-growing oocytes, each one surrounded by a layer of somatic granulosa cells (GCs) on a basal lamina. As oocytes start to grow the GCs change shape from flattened to cuboidal, increase their proliferation and form multiple layers, providing a unique model for studying the relationship between cell shape, proliferation and multilayering with...

The crystal structure of the title Schiff base complex is obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The solid state structure determination reveals that the coordination geometry around the copper(II) center istetrahedrally distorted square-planar. The crystal packing shows one dimensional infinite chains which arisesfrom the intermolecular interaction and stabilize the crystal packing.

We have used electron cryo-microscopy and image analysis to examine the native structure of immature, protease-deficient (PR-) and mature, wild-type (WT) Moloney murine leukemia virus (MuLV). Maturational cleavage of the Gag polyprotein by the viral protease is associated with striking morphological changes. The PR- MuLV particles exhibit a rounded central core, which has a characteristic track...

The surface area occupied by nonionic detergents of the type C(12)EO(n) (n = 1-8) in POPC C (12)EO (n) mixed membranes was studied by means of time-resolved resonance energy transfer (RET) between the fluorescent probe molecules NBD-PE and rhodamine-PE. The area data were interpreted within the frame of Israelachvili's concept of packing constraints yielding the critical packing parameter, f, a...

Research addressing two-dimensional irregular shape packing has largely focused on the strip packing variant of the problem. However, it can be argued that this is a simplification. Materials from which pieces are required to be cut will ultimately have a fixed length either due to the physical dimensions of the material or through constraints on the cutting machinery. Hence, in order to cut al...

Erupting magma often contains crystals over a wide range of sizes and shapes, potentially affecting magma viscosity over many orders of magnitude. A robust relation between viscosity and the modality of crystal sizes and shapes remains lacking, principally because of the dimensional complexity and size of the governing parameter space. We have performed a suite of shear viscosity measurements o...
