We report about a novel imaging technique for airflow analysis, particle image velocimetry (PIV), used in a moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patient. By measuring the airflow characteristics in the upper airway at different protrusion positions, the effect of mandibular advancement device (MAD) on OSA was further understood.
In this study the use of particle image velocimetry (PIV) in multiphase ows is described. Velocity elds are measured of both the continuous and the dispersed phase in a bubble column. From the measurements, turbulence characteristics like the strain rate and mutual correlations between gas and liquid velocities can be derived for the validation of numerical simulations.
A new 2D velocimetry technique based on streaks formed by individual phosphor particles, which are moving during their luminescence decay following pulsed excitation is proposed in this study. Tin-doped particles (Sr,Mg)3(PO4)2:Sn2+ dispersed into flows and excited a UV light sheet. During the time (~27 µs), emission due to particle motion recorded. fitting then applied each streak against anal...
Microvascular multinozzle arrays are designed and fabricated for high-throughput printing of functional materials. Ink-flow uniformity within these multigeneration, bifurcating microchannel arrays is characterized by computer modeling and microscopic particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) measurements. Both single and dual multinozzle printheads are produced to enable rapid printing of multilay...
The Aerospace Research Laboratory at the University of Virginia currently uses Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to measure the velocity fields of flow through a Mach 2 Scramjet Test Section. PIV is the method of tracking seed particles as they are carried through the flow, and using their velocities to create a velocity field. This method is limited by seed particles coating the windows, known ...
In this article, we present an experimental setup and data processing schemes for 3D scanning particle tracking velocimetry (SPTV), which expands on the classical 3D particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) through changes in the illumination, image acquisition and analysis. 3D PTV is a flexible flow measurement technique based on the processing of stereoscopic images of flow tracer particles. The t...
Point-based three-dimensional volumetric measurement systems are defined as multi-view vision systems which reconstruct a three-dimensional scene by first identifying key points on the views and then performing the reconstruction. Examples of these are defocusing digital particle image velocimetry (DDPIV) (Pereira et al 2000 Exp. Fluids 29 S78–84) and 3D particle tracking velocimetry (3DPTV) (P...
In dc glow discharge dusty plasmas, the formation of dust acoustic waves is a commonly observed phenomenon. Experiments in the dusty plasma experiment device produce naturally occurring dust acoustic waves with frequencies f N 5 to 25 Hz and phase velocities of Vph N 0.5 to 10 cm/s. Through the use of particle image velocimetry techniques, particle motion in the vicinity of the wavefronts is id...
Digital Particle Imaging Velocimetry (DPIV) is a powerful nonintrusive measuring technique that has become popular in the last decade with the availability of commercial systems. In contrast to Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), which utilizes analogue imaging and therefore time-consuming post processing, for DPIV digital video recording is encountered which is ideally suited for digital data pr...
