Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the most common congenital heart disease in dogs. It is due to the failure of the ductus arteriosus muscle to constrict, leaving a passageway for blood flow and resulting in eventual left-sided heart disease and/or generalized heart failure. It is hereditary in several breeds. The typical left-to-right PDA is amenable to minimally invasive procedures or open su...
In a report on 1,000 autopsies performed on patients dying of congenital heart disease, Abbott (1937) found that the principal lesion was a patent ductus arteriosus in 282 patients; 20% of these were infant deaths. Subsequently numerous reports have stressed that while this abnormality can prove fatal during the first year of life, surgery in skilled hands offers an effective remedy at this age...
OBJECTIVES To describe the characteristics and outcome of children with an isolated silent patent ductus arteriosus (SPDA), with comparison to non-silent ducts. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1999 and 2004, all consecutive cases of isolated silent and non-silent-patent ductus were recorded at the National Register of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, Lebanese Society of Cardiology. Patien...
Since mid-1973 29 cases of isolated patent ductus arteriosus were treated in the Hong Kong University surgical unit with a new technique of suture and division. This technique has almost eliminated the problem of intraoperative haemorrhage and its consequences.
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the most prevalent cardiovascular defect and is more often seen in females; premature babies are at increased risk. For both sexes, a relationship exists between the risk of this defect occurring and the higher dimensions of the ductus arteriosus. In this study, we examined the relationship between the dimensions of the ductus arteriosus (diameter, length, capa...
This article describes a technique which allows the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) to be closed through a minithoracotomy. It combines a simple method of inducing atelectasis with Ligaclip closure of the PDA through a subaxillary incision. It was used successfully in 11 children and adolescents.
Since the first operation for patent ductus arteriosus performed by Gross in 1938, many papers have been published, Gross himself reporting more than 600 patients treated until 1953. Wide indications for operative treatment are now generally accepted in view of the low operative mortality and the risks that are present without surgery. As to the operation itself, discussion still continues beca...
