This paper describes the operation of the European Union Reference Laboratory for Feed Additives (EURL) and its role in the authorisation procedure of feed additives in the European Union. Feed additives are authorised according to Regulation (EC) No. 1831/2003, which introduced a completely revised authorisation procedure and also established the EURL. The regulations authorising feed additive...

This study describes a medium-throughput system based on deposition of calcium phosphate films in multi-well tissue culture plates that can be used to study the effect of inorganic additives on the behavior of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in a standardized manner. All tested elements, copper, zinc, strontium, fluoride and carbonate were homogenously deposited into calcium phosphate films in vary...

Ethoxylated waxes and high molecular weight alcohols can be synthesised from synthetic waxes. The conversions in these syntheses are generally low. A purification process is thus required to ensure good utilization of the reagents and a high purity of the products. Due to the fact that these components are not stable at high temperatures, conventional separation methods are not suitable. Superc...

An adjuvant is any material added to a herbicide spray solution to enhance or modify the performance of the solution. Adjuvants can be divided into two general categories: spray modifiers and activators (Kirkwood, 1994). Spray modifiers are those adjuvants that change the wetting, spreading or sticking characteristics of the spray solution. This is primarily accomplished by a modification in th...

Feed additives are largely used in beef cattle diets to improve performance and reduce risks of nutritional disorder diseases like acidosis and timpanism. However, some countries tend to ban the use of ionophore in animal nutrition due to the risk of resistance of some microorganisms. Therefore, alternatives to non-antibiotic additives must be studied. The objective of this work was to investig...

The role played by inorganic chemical additives in fire retardancy and flame inhibition is considered. Particular attention is given to the molecular level aspects of commercially important systems containing compounds of antimony, halogens, and phosphorus. The flame inhibiting function of metal containing additives is also discussed.

Presumed allergic reactions to hidden food additives are both controversial and important. Clinical manifestations include asthma, urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylactic-anaphylactoid events. Most adverse reactions are caused by just a few additives, such as sulfites and monosodium glutamate. Diagnosis is suspected from the history and confirmed by specific challenge. The treatment is specific...

Since 2001 Upcountry Maui residents have been concerned that water additives may be linked to health problems in their community. A study using phone surveys was conducted to assess this issue. Most people suffered skin rashes, while others experienced eye irritations or respiratory problems. The surveys suggested that these symptoms might have been attributable to the water additives.

Billets of hexagonal boron nitride powders (h-BN) were hot-pressed, varying the alignment of the platelike particles and the amount of oxide additives. Increasing either alignment of individual grains or the amount of additives was shown to increase flexural strength, to approximately 120 MPa at ambient temperatures. h-BN was shown to deflect cracks initially propagating normal to its basal pla...
