Phage typing of 13,579 clinical and environmental strains of Staphylococcus aureus received at the Quebec Public Health Laboratory between 1976 and 1983 was routinely performed to assess the distribution of lytic groups. Strains susceptible to phages 94, 95, and 96 predominated and accounted for 25% of the specimens. The distribution of strains in lytic groups varied with time and specimen source.
Dowell, C. E. (The University of Texas, Dallas) and E. D. Rosenblum. Serology and transduction in staphylococcal phage. J. Bacteriol. 84:1071-1075. 1962.-A triply lysogenic strain of Staphylococcus aureus was shown to carry a serological group B phage capable of transduction. Three typing phages (53, 80, 42D), either belonging to serological group B or having a close association with it, were a...
Purpose: The present study aimed to confirm by classical and molecular laboratory methods hospitalassociated outbreaks due to virulent Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. Methods: Eighty three Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from new-born patients, adults and hospital environment and devices in five hospital units, were analyzed for resistance to antibiotics, including last generation cephalo...
We compared the phage types, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and plasmid profiles of 20 groups of isolates received at the Centers for Disease Control from Salmonella typhimurium outbreaks between 1975 and 1982 to determine the most useful laboratory method for identifying epidemiologically related isolates of S. typhimurium. In 18 (90%) of the 20 outbreaks, epidemiologically related isolate...

Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophages (25 phages) were lyophilized in aliquots 12 to 18 years ago and stored in vacuo at -20 degrees C. Eight viruses each lost one log titer, while seventeen retained the original titers. The use of lyophilized phages provided more reproducible phage typing and reduced by 75% the complexity and cost. This important test is thus made feasible for more laboratories.
