1D nanocaterpillar structures were spontaneously formed during the synthesis of fully conjugated poly(2,5-dihexyloxy-1,4-phenylene)-block-polythiophene due to the strong π-π interactions between the polythiophene blocks. With the elongation of the polythiophene block, nanostructures evolved from nanospheres to nanocaterpillars and their length and height increased with good control.

The multicomponent reaction of 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, catechol, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylboronic acid and 1,5-dinaphtho-38-crown-10 or bis-para-phenylene-34-crown-10, respectively, resulted in the formation of rotaxanes, which were characterized by X-ray crystallography.

2,4,6-Tri(dimethylaminomethyl)-phenol was synthesized as a trifunctional moiety and incorporated onto poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) to obtain a novel quaternary ammonium functionalized PPO (PPO-TQA). Membranes of the polymer were fabricated and exhibited high conductivity, a low swelling ratio and water uptake.
