Increased plaque vascularization is causatively associated with the progression of unstable atherosclerotic vessel disease. We investigated the safety and efficacy of heat-generating radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in reducing the number of vessels in the plaque and adventitia and its effect on plaque size and composition. To this end, New Zealand White rabbits were fed a cholesterol-enriched die...
A sensitive, quantitative and reproducible plaque assay for the measurement of the simian rotavirus SAII is described. Plaque formation required the presence of the facilitators pancreatin or trypsin and diethylaminoethyl-dextran in the agar overlay. SAII produced plaques in three continuous primate cell lines: MA-104, CV-1 and LLC-MK2. MA-104 cells were the most sensitive.
Difficulties with in vivo studies of natural plaque and its complex, heterogeneous structure have led to development of laboratory biofilm plaque model systems. Technologies for their culture are outlined, and the rationale, strengths, and relative uses of two complementary approaches to microbial models with a focus on plaque biodiversity are analyzed. Construction of synthetic consortia biofi...
The insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene has been associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, but whether it is a risk factor for underlying atherosclerosis remains unclear. Therefore, we examined to see whether the ACE gene deletion polymorphism was associated with carotid wall thickening and atherosclerotic plaque formation in ...
Complementary antibodies, i.e. antibodies having combining site structures which are at least partially directed against each other, were induced in A/He mice by immunization with phosphorylcholine (Pc) coupled to keyhole limpet hemocyanin or with the Pc-binding IgA myeloma protein, HOPC-8 (H8). Both responses were monitored by enumerating plaque-forming cells and assaying serum antibody levels...
Carotid atherosclerotic plaques are a major cause of ischaemic stroke. The biomechanical environment to which the arterial wall and plaque is subjected to plays an important role in the initiation, progression and rupture of carotid plaques. MRI is frequently used to characterize the morphology of a carotid plaque, but new developments in MRI enable more functional assessment of carotid plaques...
INTRODUCTION To determine the prevalence and clinical/laboratory associations of subclinical atherosclerosis and impaired bone health in primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS). METHODS 64 consecutive patients with primary SS, 77 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 60 healthy controls (HC) οf similar age and sex distribution were enrolled. Demographics, clinical/laboratory features, classical risk fac...
This case documents the finding of a spontaneous plaque rupture with thrombus formation in the left main coronary artery of a patient who presented with an infarction of the circumflex artery. This serendipitous observation supports the hypothesis that spontaneous plaque ruptures occur sporadically and do not necessarily lead to occlusion.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) normally undergoes productive infection in culture, causing cell destruction and plaque formation. Here we characterize an unusual pattern of HSV type 1 (HSV-1) infection in MDBK cells which surprisingly results in suppression of replication, cell recovery, and maintenance of virus. Compared to Vero cells, MDBK cells supported a normal productive infection at a high m...
