Background: Tuberculous, parapneumonic and traumatic loculated pleural-effusions pose therapeutic challenges due to resultant pleural-thickening and compromised lung-function for life. Tuberculosis is widely prevalent in developing countries, necessitating appropriate, effective, and economical treatment for loculated pleural-effusion to reduce the burden and sequelae. <s...
BACKGROUND Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) of the thyroid is an extremely rare disease; only three cases have been reported in the English literature to date. Here, we describe a case involving a patient with thyroid EHE successfully treated with curative surgery. CASE PRESENTATION A 74-year-old woman presented with a right thyroid mass. The nodule was approximately 2 cm in size and wa...
Pulmonary Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma is a rare and low grade tumor of endothelial origin found in the lungs. At onset patients are usually asymptomatic or present with non-specific symptoms. Chest imaging shows the presence of multiple, bilateral small nodules and diagnosis usually requires a lung biopsy. At this time there is no standardized treatment regimen and the prognosis is variable.
Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the small bowel is extremely rare. We report the first case of sarcomatoid carcinoma identified by video capsule endoscopy in a patient referred for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Computed tomography and small bowel follow through failed to identify the tumor. The tumor was visualized initially on video capsule endoscopy examination and a 6 x 3 cm polypoid, fungatin...
Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor and has a high mortality in newborns when associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS). In two newborns with KHE and severe KMS refractory to medical treatment, emergency embolization led to clinical improvement in the acute neonatal setting by reducing tumor volume, increasing the platelet count, and improving other clotting par...
The first step in diagnosing the cause of effusion is to differentiate exudate from transudate. In according to that, Light’s criteria has been used for years, but sometimes the amount of protein and LDH of the pleural effusion remains at the borderline, therefore detecting other components may be useful. This research is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 70 patients having pleural ef...
Background: The alteration of Th1 and Th2 cytokine levels is the subject of controversy in pleural effusions caused by malignancy, a situation that favors a Th2 immune response. Objective: To examine the different levels of IL-4 and IL-10 (Th2 cytokines), and IL-2 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) (Th1 cytokines) in malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions. Method: The cytokine levels in pleural fl...
abstract background: at present, differentiation between exudative and transudative pleural effusion is based solely on laboratory measures and is time-consuming. asimple bedside method would be of great help to differentiate between these two types of effusions. we present a new method for this purpose assessed in 46 patients. methods: standard laboratory tests and our method were tested ...
Introduction: Cancers are the most prevalent causes of exudative pleural effusions after para-pneumonic pleural effusions. Despite the combination of the pleural fluid cytological studies and pleural biopsy, diagnosis could not be reached in an important number of cases. In an attempt to improve the value of pleural fluid analysis in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion, some studies...
We report a case of a 76-year-old female with multiple lung nodules (Fig. 1 Rx). Pathologic evaluation of the lower left video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy VATS-lobectomy showed four nodules that were described as pulmonary epithelioid hemangio-endothelioma (PEH); the immunohistochemical stains showed that the neoplastic cells expressed CD31, a variable expression for factor ...
