South Africa faces a severe and growing obesity epidemic. Obesity and its co-morbidities raise public and private expenditures on healthcare. Sugary beverages are heavily consumed in South Africa and are linked to the onset of overweight and obesity. Excise taxation of sugary beverages has been proposed and adopted in other settings as a means to reduce harms from their consumption. A tax on th...

The objective of this study has been to develop a typical specification of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) for Iran’s composition of imports including capital, intermediate and consumer goods. Accordingly, we first test the hypotheses that import demand is homothetic, homogeneous, symmetric, and depends on domestic prices. Then, we estimate the long-run elasticities of the composition o...

The United States has been increasing the import of wooden bedroom furniture from the world to meet its domestic needs. Traditional suppliers have been substituted by developing countries such as China and Vietnam over the past decade. To explain this market structure change, a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) was employed to analyze this import market. Monthly import data of the top s...

We empirically estimate the substitutability of fixed and mobile services for telecommunications access using a large, U.S. household survey conducted over the period 2000-2001. Estimated cross-price elasticities confirm that second fixed line and mobile services are substitutes for one another. The extent of fixed-mobile substitution has important implications for policy toward fixed network u...

In this article we show how to implement merger simulation in Stata after estimating an aggregate nested logit demand system with a linear regression model. We also show how to implement merger simulation when the demand parameters are not estimated, but instead calibrated to be consistent with outside information on average price elasticities and pro…t margins.

This paper analyzes price elasticities in the Austrian market for mobile telecommunications services using data on firm specific tariffs. Both static and a dynamic panel data approaches lead to consistent results which provide evidence for a relatively elastic demand. Furthermore, some basic facts on the Austrian mobile telephone sector are presented. JEL-Classification: C23, L13, L96.

We discuss bootstrap confidence intervals for short-run and long-run demand and supply elasticities for imports and exports. We use Koshal, Shukla and Koirla’s (1992) simultaneous equation demand and supply model for Indian exports based on 1960-1986 data. Although the long run price elasticity of supply is large, (about 25) and significant, the asymptotic as well as bootstrap confidence interv...

Pakistan, like many LDCs, derives most of government revenue from indirect taxation. However, the system of taxes and subsidies has grown up piecemeal over the years, and it is unlikely that it cannot be improved. Any tax reform proposal must deal with the basic issues of equity and efficiency. Changes in taxes benefit or hurt people according to their demand and supply patterns, while the effe...

The main purpose of this study is to examine the responsiveness of peasant farmers to changes in price and non-price factors. To this end, quadratic production and restricted profit functions are fitted to farm-level survey data from Ethiopia. The results indicate that farmers respond significantly to price incentives, but the effect of prices on output supply and fertilizer demand is negligibl...
