BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The electronic reference to access in vivo concentrations (ERETIC) method is a promising technique for absolute concentration quantification by brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS). However, in its usual form, the technique cannot be implemented in most clinical MR scanners. For this reason, we propose a new strategy for transmitting the ERETIC signal b...

We recently described the chemical network properties of the human brain using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS). In a separate study of aging we found increased concentration of chemicals in the prefrontal and sensorimotor cortices up to the third decade of life, and subsequent decrease of chemical concentrations in the same brain regions after the third decade between ...

Little is known about the neurobiological factors that determine functional outcome in people at high risk for psychosis. We use multimodal neuroimaging to investigate whether cortical responses during a cognitive task and thalamic glutamate levels were associated with subsequent functional outcome. Sixty subjects participated: 27 healthy controls (CTRL) and 33 at ultrahigh risk (UHR) for psych...

Patients with severe congestive heart failure have deranged cognition,1,2 and their ability to manage everyday problems is impaired.3 Cardiovascular reflexes, as well as autonomic and endocrine functions that may involve the central nervous system, are also profoundly disrupted. It is therefore of the utmost importance to understand the consequences of severe congestive heart failure for brain ...

INTRODUCTION To characterize the contents of choline (Cho), creatine (Cr) and N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAA) in the hippocampus of healthy volunteers, we investigated the contents and their correlationship with age, gender and laterality. MATERIAL AND METHODS Volunteers were grouped into a young, a middle and an old age. The Cho, Cr and NAA contents were determined with proton magnetic reson...

Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is a rare metabolic disorder caused by a defect in the glycine cleavage enzyme system, resulting in high glycine concentrations in the brain. We report a neonate in which proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy provided biochemical evidence of elevated brain glycine levels and facilitated early diagnosis of NKH and guided clinical management.

OBJECTIVES To assess the time course changes in N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and creatine (Cr) levels in the brain of athletes who suffered a sport-related concussion. PARTICIPANTS Eleven nonconsecutive athletes with concussive head injury and 11 sex- and age-matched control volunteers MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES : At 3, 15, 30, and 45 days postinjury, athletes were examined by proton magnetic resonan...

Brain water diffusion in response to transient global ischemia (12 min), reperfusion (60 min), and cardiac arrest was monitored by localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The trace of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor (ADC(Av)) was determined at high temporal resolution (10 sec) to assess the putative neuroprotective potential of oral creatine (Cr) in rats that received 2.2 g ...

Lipid characterization of bone marrow in vivo with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed using Spin-Echo Planar Spectroscopic Imaging sequences. The methods are shown capable of rapidly generating two-dimensional chemical shift imaging data sets suitable for measuring lipid indices that reflect unsaturation levels among triglycerides, as demonstrated in oil phantoms and bone marr...

Consistent brain imaging findings demonstrate that neurobiological factors may contribute to the pathology of 'central' pain states such as fibromyalgia (FM). Studies using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy suggest that glutamate (Glu), a key excitatory neurotransmitter, may be present in higher concentrations within the brains of FM patients. This neurotransmitter imbalance is present in ...
