Acute non-obstructive pyelonephritis is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of acute renal failure (ARF), especially in patients with little or no evidence of previous kidney disease. Diagnosis i...

Although coliform bacteria are the organisms most commonly recovered from the urine of patients with pyelonephritis, they seldom cause infection in the absence of some kind of renal injury.' These bacteria are not suitable, therefore, for experiments designed to study alterations of structure and function attributable to infection alone. For these purposes it would seem preferable to employ mic...

The initial management of pyelonephritis needs to look for complicating factors. Ultrasound and X ray of the abdomen are able to rule out a urinary dilatation or a stone. The treatment is then surgical with renal drainage. Additional investigations such as a CT scan should be performed in patients with complicating factors or recurrence. In uncomplicated pyelonephritis a ambulatory treatment wi...

The pattern of ampicillin resistance and possible association with virulence factors of 78 Escherichia coli isolates taken from 78 pregnant women with pyelonephritis were evaluated. The current incidence of ampicillin resistance among pyelonephritis isolates (46%) was significantly higher than that reported in 1985 (22%). Resistance was found more frequently during the first (60%) and third (53...

Rats with desoxycorticosterone (DCA) -saline induced hypertension have been shown to exhibit increased susceptibility to experimental pyelonephritis (1, 2). These studies lend support to the hypothesis that various injuries, including nephrosclerosis, predispose to human pyelonephritis and that pyelonephritis is superimposed upon hypertensive disease more frequently than is usually suspected. O...
