Fluorescent-labeled molecules have been used extensively for a wide range of applications in biological detection and diagnosis. A new form of highly luminescent and photostable nanoparticles was generated by doping the fluorescent dye tris(2'2-bipyridyl)dichlororuthenium(II)hexahydrate (Rubpy) inside silica material. Because thousands of fluorescent dye molecules are encapsulated in the silica...

ZnS nanoparticles have been synthesized using various amounts of aqueous Azadirachta Indica (Neem) leaf extract as capping agent and stabilizer. The synthesized nanoparticles were studied by FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and UV-Visible spectroscopy. FTIR spect...

Molecular imaging is rapidly developing as a powerful tool in research and medical diagnostic. By integrating complementary signal reporters into a single nanoparticulate contrast agent, multimodal molecular imaging can be performed as scalable images with high sensitivity, resolution and specificity. In this review, multifunctional nanoparticles (MFNPs) are classified into four types: conjugat...

Nanoparticles used in biological applications encounter a complex mixture of extracellular proteins. Adsorption of these proteins on the nanoparticle surface results in the formation of a "protein corona," which can dominate the interaction of the nanoparticle with the cellular environment. The goal of this research was to determine how nanoparticle composition and surface modification affect t...

We present a density functional theory (DFT) study aimed at understanding the injection and recombination processes that occur at the interface between PbS QDs and TiO2 oxide nanoparticles with different morphologies. The calculated injection rates fall in the picosecond timescale in good agreement with the experiments. In addition, our simulations show that the (101) facet of TiO2 more favoura...

Discrete nanostructures of CdSe@ZnS QDs and Au NPs were prepared and the photonic interactions between the QDs and Au NPs were systematically investigated. We found that the Au/QD ratio, separation distances between Au NPs and QDs, and the size of the Au NPs in a given discrete nanostructure all affect the interaction between Au NPs and QDs.

In the present work, we theoretically propose an optical scheme to detect the possible signature of Majorana fermions via the optical pump-probe spectroscopy, which is very different from the current tunneling measurement based on electrical methods. The scheme consists of a metal nanoparticle and a semiconductor quantum dot coupled to a hybrid semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures. The...

The photoluminescence of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in different configurations at solid surfaces (glass, silicon, PDMS, and metals) is considered for three types of organization: QDs directly adsorbed on solid surfaces, separated from the solid surface by a nanoscale polymer film with different thickness, and encapsulated into a polymer film. The complete suppression of photoluminescence for ...

We demonstrate rapid and efficient sensing of mammalian cell types and states using nanoparticle-based sensor arrays. These arrays are comprised of cationic quantum dots (QDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that interact with cell surfaces to generate distinguishable fluorescence responses based on cell surface signatures. The use of QDs as the recognition elements as well as the signal transdu...
