A general and efficient Rh(I)-catalyzed decarbonylative direct C2-olefination of indoles with vinyl carboxylic acids has been developed. The reaction exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, giving a broad range of C2-alkenylated indoles in good to excellent yields.

A method to prepare highly conjugated indenes efficiently by iron(III) chloride-catalysed dimerisation of trisubstituted propargylic alcohols under very mild conditions at room temperature is described. The reactions are rapid and operationally straightforward, giving the indene products in good yields and regioselectivity.

2-Pyrrolines can be generated by the PhP(2-catechyl) mediated coupling of alkene-tethered imines and acid chlorides. This reaction proceeds via phosphorus-containing 1,3-dipoles, which undergo cycloaddition with alkenes with high stereo- and regioselectivity. The reaction of 5-benzenesulfonyl-3,4-dihydro-1 H-pyridin-2-one derivatives with azides or isocyanides provided two new classes of compounds, triazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-5-ones 3 or pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridin-2-ones 4, respectively, in good yields and regioselectivity.
