Observations show that solar activity is distributed non-axisymmetrically, concentrating at “preferred longitudes”. This indicates the important role of non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in the origin of solar activity. We investigate the generation of the non-axisymmetric fields and their coupling with axisymmetric solar magnetic field. Our kinematic generation (dynamo) model operating in a sph...

It was recently demonstrated that lugh-resolution deutenum NMR m sohds may be accomphshed by magc angle sample spuming e\ren when the rotation frequency, wJ277 = 1 kHz, IS much less than the quadrupole coupling, WQ/21r = 4 %7-qQ/h = 130 l&I2 [l-4] The sample rotation removes the broademng of spectra of amorphous and polycrystalline samples due to the anlsotropic quadrupole and chemical-shift in...

The structure and dynamics of stably stratified homogeneous sheared turbulence is investigated in terms of the triadic interaction of vorticity v , rate-of-strain S, and scalar ~density fluctuation! gradient G[1r8. Results of direct numerical simulations are presented. Due to the presence of the mean velocity and scalar gradients, distinct directional preferences develop which affect the dynami...

The dissociation of gramicidin A (gA) channels into monomers is the simplest example of a channel gating process. The initial steps in this process are studied via a computational model that simulates the reaction coordinate for dimer-monomer dissociation. The nonbonded interaction energy between the monomers is determined, allowing for their free relative translational and rotational motion. L...

The diagonal component ␧ xx and off-diagonal component ␧ xy of the complex dielectric tensor for the ferromagnetic compound NiMnSb are determined using ex situ spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optic analysis over the spectral range from 0.7 to 6.2 eV. The effects of the overcoat on the raw data are removed by the analysis. First, the complex ␧ xx of thin-film NiMnSb were determined by ex ...

We address the synthesis of serial chain spatial mechanisms with revolute joints in which the rotations about the joints are coupled via cables and pulleys. Such coupled serial chain mechanisms o er a middle ground between the more versatile and compact serial chains and the simpler closed chains by combining some of the advantages of both types of systems. In particular, we focus on the synthe...

Because of their importance in the accurate modeling of the Earth’s orientation in space, some non-negligible predictable effects on precession-nutation are investigated. This paper considers the coupling effects between the axial and the equatorial components of the Earth’s rotation vector in the dynamical equations, and the effects of the second order lunisolar torque due to the Earth’s zonal...

To answer the topical question we survey synoptically the recent literature in pulsation theory. We restrict the topics to those which are not dealt with otherwise in this volume. We address research on roAp stars, EC 14026 variables, strange modes, luminous blue variables, pulsation-rotation coupling, and pulsations in compact objects seen from the classical, as well as the relativistic, viewp...

We study the weak-field limit of string-dilaton gravity and derive corrections to the Newtonian potential which strength directly depends on the self interaction potential and the nonminimal coupling of the dilaton scalar field. We discuss also possible astrophysical applications of the results, in particular the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies.
