Let R be the Wiener sausage of radius about a planar Brownian motion run to time 1. Let P be the probability that R contains the line segment [0, 1] on the x-axis. Upper and lower estimates are given for P . The upper estimate implies that the range of a planar Brownian motion contains no line segment.

We wish to draw attention to a very characteristic but little known syndrome. An elderly woman presented with a 'sausage finger', rheumatological jargon used to describe diffuse swelling of the digit. We present here the full-length genome sequences of two hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV-3) isolates from a human stool sample from a patient with acute hepatitis and a raw sausage containing pig liver. Sequence analysis implies that Swiss HEV isolates may form a novel subgroup of HEV-3 viruses.

We study the effects of the Nutricate receipt, which makes personalized recommendations to switch from unhealthy to healthier items at a restaurant chain. We find that the receipts shifted the mix of items purchased toward the healthier alternatives. For example, the share of adult main dishes requesting "no sauce" increased by 6.8 percent, the share of kids' meals with apples (instead of fries...

BACKGROUND Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), used primarily as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride, is found in a variety of products. Previous studies have quantified human exposure by back calculating intakes based on DEHP metabolite concentrations in urine and by determining concentrations of DEHP in exposure media (e.g., air, food, dust). OBJECTIVES To better understand the timing and e...

The food additive nitrite (E249, E250) is commonly used in meat curing as a food preservation method. Because of potential negative health effects of nitrite, its use is strictly regulated. In an earlier study we have shown that the calculated intake of nitrite in children can exceed the acceptable daily intake (ADI) when conversion from dietary nitrate to nitrite is included. This study examin...
