The aim of this paper is to give a survey of results and ideas concerning orbits of operators and related notions of weak and polynomial orbits. These concepts are closely related to the invariant subspace/subset problem. Most of the proofs are not given in full details, we rather try to indicate the basic ideas. The central problems in the field are also formulated. Mathematics Subject Classif...

The first part of this paper describes some important underlying themes in the mathematical theory of continuum mechanics that are distinct from formulating and analyzing governing equations. The main part of this paper is devoted to a survey of some concrete, conceptually simple, pretty problems that help illuminate the underlying themes. The paper concludes with a discussion of the crucial ro...

We use ergodic theory to prove a quantitative version of a theorem of M. A. Berger and Y. Wang, which relates the joint spectral radius of a set of matrices to the spectral radii of finite products of those matrices. The proof rests on a theorem asserting the existence of a continuous invariant splitting for certain matrix cocycles defined over a minimal homeomorphism and having the property th...

Let M = G/K be a generalized flag manifold, that is the adjoint orbit of a compact semisimple Lie group G. We use the variational approach to find invariant Einstein metrics for all flag manifolds with two isotropy summands. We also determine the nature of these Einstein metrics as critical points of the scalar curvature functional under fixed volume. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Pr...

The first part of this paper consists of lecture notes which summarize the machinery of filtered root invariants. A conceptual notion of “homotopy Greek letter element” is also introduced, and evidence is presented that it may be related to the root invariant. In the second part we compute some low dimensional root invariants of v1 -periodic elements at the prime 2. AMS Classification numbers P...

The paper is a short survey around the author’s recent works on topics related to complex Monge-Ampère equations and strictly pseudoconvex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. 1. Invariant differential operators In complex analysis of one variable, the fact that the invariant property for Laplace operator under holomorphic change of coordinates plays an important role. Namely, Let φ : D1 → D2 be a holom...

We bound the j-invariant of integral points on a modular curve in terms of the congruence group defining the curve. We apply this to prove that the modular curve Xsplit(p ) has no non-trivial rational point if p is a sufficiently large prime number. Assuming the GRH, one can replace p by p. A systematic exposition is given of the theory of invariant differential operators on a not necessarily reductive homogeneous space. This exposition is modelled on Helgason’s treatment of the general reductive case and the special nonreductive case of the space of horocycles. As a final application the differential operators on (not a priori reductive) isotropic pseudo-Riemannian spaces are cha...

The paper analyses a model in surface growth, where uniqueness of weak solutions seems to be out of reach. We provide the existence of a weak martingale solution satisfying energy inequalities and having the Markov property. Furthermore, under non-degeneracy conditions on the noise, we establish that any such solution is strong Feller and has a unique invariant measure. 2000 Mathematics Subject...
