The objective of this experiment was to test a hypothesis that L-carnitine supplemented diet would improve semen characteristics in 6 adult crossbred AI boars (Hampshire × Pietrain). The control and the tested diet were identical except the tested period (8 weeks) when the diet was supplemented with 2 g of l-carnitine per boar per day. The semen was collected regularly weekly by a gloved-hand t...

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of green tea polyphenol on the quality of canine semen after long-term storage at 5°C. The supplementation of a Tris-egg yolk extender with polyphenol (0.5, 0.75, or 1mg/mL) increased the motility and viability of sperm preserved for four weeks at 5°C.

We have approached the problem of refrigerated storage of epididymal sperm samples from red deer by comparing three options: storing the genital (testicles within the scrotum), diluting the semen in extender or diluting the semen in extender supplemented with an anti-oxidant. Twenty-nine pairs of testes were collected. Spermatozoa from one of each of the pairs were immediately recovered, and di...

Density gradient centrifugation of semen is commonly used in many assisted reproduction techniques. Although gradients have the potential to isolate and enrich motile and viable spermatozoa, the centrifugation force presents a stress factor to cell organelles and membranes. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of density gradient centrifugation stress on sperm capacitation dyna...

The phylogenetic order Squamata has many representatives that could benefit from the use of semen preservation as a tool for assisting conservation. To date, few studies have been made evaluating the potential for collecting and preserving semen from snakes. The objectives of this study were to characterize semen parameters of the corn snake (Elaphe guttata), including appearance, volume, conce...

Sperm penetration assay (SPA) scores obtained from cryobanked semen were correlated with therapeutic insemination (TI) fecundity in a group of established sperm donors, thereby evaluating the efficacy of the SPA in screening donors for sperm banking. While the SPA has been used to separate fertile from infertile males, we altered assay conditions to use frozen semen and to distinguish performan...

Although there are many studies for the storage of semen in honey bees, desired success has not been achieved, and more study is needed this area. It reported that percentage bee egg-laying queen bees fertilized with stored semen, especially long-term conditions below expected rate despite viability rate. The reason situation spermatozoa negatively affected by freezing processes due to their ve...

By determining the species-specific structure by morphological examination of sperm, it is possible to improve some disadvantages related short and long-term storage use in artificial insemination applications. When morphology canary spermatozoon evaluated, seen that has a long indented acrosome as well rather flagellum. To determine semen, methods used different poultry can be applied visually...

We observed the influences of low-temperature storage of the feline epididymis on the epididymal semen qualities before and after cryopreservation to identify the optimal duration for low-temperature storage of the epididymis. After excision, the feline epididymis was stored at 4 degrees C for 0-72 hr and then subjected to epididymal sperm collection. When sperm from the refrigerated cauda epid...

A procedure was developed to rank AI sires on utility. The utility function considered transmitting abilities for production, udder depth, teat placement; and foot angle, semen cost, timing of costs and revenues, gene flow, and risk. Weights for type traits relative to production and risk aversion were based on the literature. A three-generation planning horizon was used. Utility was expressed ...
