Semi supervised methods involve converting unlabelled data into high quality labelled data that can be used to improve the performance of conventional supervised methods that had previously been given a small training set. Unlabelled data has also been shown to be helpful in a supervised setting called ‘bridging’ where unlabelled data have been used to help relate labelled instances to those th...

We study the local Lipschitz–continuity of the value function v associated with a Bolza Problem in presence of a Lagrangian L(x, q), convex and uniformly superlinear in q, but only Borel–measurable in x. Under these assumptions, the associated integral functional is not lower semicontinuous with respect to the suitable topology which assures the existence of minimizers, so all results known in ...

Several methods for automatically generating labeled examples that can be used as training data for WSD systems have been proposed, including a semisupervised approach based on relevance feedback (Stevenson et al., 2008a). This approach was shown to generate examples that improved the performance of a WSD system for a set of ambiguous terms from the biomedical domain. However, we find that this...

Abstract: Resistance testing is an important tool in today’s anti-HIV therapy management for improving the success of antiretroviral therapy. Routinely, the genetic sequence of viral target proteins is obtained. These sequences are then inspected for mutations that might confer resistance to antiretroviral drugs. However, interpretation of the genomic data is challenging. In recent years, appro...

We characterize the value function of a discounted, infinite-horizon version of the single-item lot-sizing problem. As corollaries, we show that this value function inherits several properties of finite, mixedinteger program value functions; namely, it is subadditive, lower semicontinuous and piecewise linear.

In the paper, the notion of a generalized convexity was defined and studied from the view-point of the selection and approximation theory of set-valued maps. We study the simultaneous existence of continuous relative selections and graph-approximations of lower semicontinuous and upper semicontinuous set-valued maps with α-convex values having nonempty intersection.

We present a framework to address the imbalanced data problem using semi-supervised learning. Specifically, from a supervised problem, we create a semi-supervised problem and then use a semi-supervised learning method to identify the most relevant instances to establish a welldefined training set. We present extensive experimental results, which demonstrate that the proposed framework significa...

Semi-supervised classification methods have received much attention as suitable tools to tackle training sets with large amounts of unlabeled data and a small quantity of labeled data. Several semi-supervised learning models have been proposed with different assumptions about the characteristics of the input data. Among them, the self-training process has emerged as a simple and effective techn...

This paper is devoted to introduce an axiomatic model to distinguish what functions are suitable for measuring the degree of contradiction between two Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets. After stating the needed background, in section 2, we justify and present the axioms that a contradiction measure must satisfy, and the first examples are set out. After motivating the necessity of achieving...

defined over Sobolev spaces is connected to the convexity of the potential w. In the scalar case, that is for functions u with domain or range in R, the functional I is weakly W 1,p lower semi-continuous (weakly * W ) if and only if w is convex, provided it is continuous and satisfies some growth conditions. The notion which replaces convexity in the vector case is quasi-convexity (introduced b...
