Many conceptual change theories posit that change occurs when the learner becomes dissatisfied with the current conception (Ohlsson, 2011; Strike & Posner, 1992). A necessary component of dissatisfaction is falsifying feedback. The present experiments investigate whether participants exposed to a novel method for eliminating the ability to directly falsify a misconception will still be able to ...

Almost all cultures have roots in some sort of self defence system and yet there is relatively little research in this area, outside of a sports related environment. This project investigated different applications of strikes from Kung Fu practitioners that have not been addressed before in the literature. Punch and palm strikes were directly compared from different heights and distances, with ...

In this paper we take a close look at some of the particular pathways by which majoritarian and consensual institutions affect governability. We demonstrate that the mix of majoritarian and consensual institutions found within a country can influence these pathways quite dramatically, such that they produce rather different consequences for governability, even when these pathways are relatively...

INTRODUCTION In conventional (kinetic) U.S. warfare, there exists a standard methodology for identifying and assessing collateral damage (i.e. accidental damage to civilian targets). Indeed, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) relies on a governing document that defines the policy regarding unlawful military targets (no-strike targets), and methods for estimating collateral damage from kinetic...

This paper shows that the quantitative predictions of a DSGE model with an endogenous collateral constraint are consistent with key features of the emerging markets’ Sudden Stops. Business cycle dynamics produce periods of expansion during which the ratio of debt to asset values raises enough to trigger the constraint. This sets in motion a deflation of Tobin’s Q driven by Irving Fisher’s debt-...

We report our first results of monitoring sudden ionospheric disturbances (SID). We present data taken continuously for two weeks during 20th Sept. 2002 and 4th Oct. 2002. We compare the effects of solar flares of the VLF signal with those obtained by GOES Satellite of NASA monitoring in X-rays and found excellent agreement.

Line 5 in the first paragraph of [1] under the section Option basics appeared as follows: “A call option gives the buyer of the option the right to buy the underlying asset at a fixed price (strike price or K) at any time prior to the expiration date of the option.” It is commonplace in derivatives literature to denote the strike or exercise price as K (e.g., refer to http://www.duke.edu/∼charv...

1998, vol. 53, n° 2 0034-379X In this paper, I adopt a critical sociological approach to analyse how labour law shaped a 23-day strike at a western Canadian university in the fall of 1995. I begin with a brief discussion of the sociological alternative. Next, I provide a chronology of the strike, followed by a brief analysis of how both economic and sociological models contribute to understandi...

The importance of tectonics and fluid flow in controlling cold seep habitats has long been appreciated at convergent margins but remains poorly understood in strike-slip systems. Here we present geophysical, geochemical, and biological data from an activemethane seep offshore fromDelMar, California, in the inner California borderlands (ICB). The location of this seep appears controlled by local...

The aim of the study was to establish whether the physicians' strike, which took place in Croatia in 2003, had an impact on the mortality of the population. Mortality data from the National Bureau of Statistics relating to the strike period (15 January - 14 February 2003) were selected and compared with the previous and subsequent periods of the same duration in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Of the 52,5...
