We have combined a novel low temperature positioning mechanism with a single-chip miniature superconducting quantum interference device ~SQUID! magnetometer to form an extremely sensitive new magnetic microscope, with a demonstrated spatial resolution of ;10 mm. The design and operation of this scanning SQUID microscope will be described. The absolute calibration of this instrument with an idea...

Directly coupled dc SQUID gradiometers on the basis of YBqCu,O, for unshielded NDE measurements are investigated. The influence of different SQUID layout parameters on the field sensitivity is shown. A sensitivity of 500 ffl(crn.JHz) is achieved with a baseline of 3.6 mrn. A slit in an aluminium plate was detected in an demonstration of NDE in 1 cm depth with eddy current method.

We study noise and noise energy of a high-Tc dc SQUID fabricated on a high-ǫR substrate whose conduction properties are given by transmission line physics. We show that transmission line resonances greatly enhance the noise. Remarkably, resistance asymmetry enhances these resonances even more. However, as the transfer function (dc dφ ) scales the same way, the noise energy is reduced by asymmet...

This paper presents a performance study of the state-of-the-art caching proxy called Squid. We instrumented Squid to measure per request network and disk activities and conducted a series of experiments on large Web caches. We have discovered many interesting and consistent patterns across a wide variety of environments. Our data and analysis are essential for understanding, modeling, benchmark...

The SQUID used to measure the flux state of a superconducting flux-based qubit interacts with the qubit and transmits its environmental noise to the qubit, thus causing the relaxation and dephasing of the qubit state. The SQUID–qubit system is analyzed and the effect of the transmittal of environmental noise is calculated. The method presented can also be applied to other quantum systems. 2001 ...

We provide a quantum analysis of a dc SQUID mechanical displacement detector within the subcritical Josephson current regime. A segment of the SQUID loop forms the mechanical resonator and motion of the latter is transduced inductively through changes in the flux threading the loop. Expressions are derived for the detector signal response and noise, which are used to evaluate the position and f...

Acoustic backscattering strength is often used as an index of biomass; however, the relationship between these variables has not been directly validated. Relationships were investigated between acoustic cross section at 200 kHz, measured as part of a previous study, and measured values of length, biovolume, dry weight, ash-free dry weight, and caloric content of the same individual specimens. A...

Changes in assessment methodology: Assessment of squids is challenging due to a lack of reliable data and their unusual life history. In this document we suggest several alternatives for calculating ABC and OFL using the NPFMC’s tier system. Tier 5 requires reliable estimates of biomass and natural mortality rate (M). Under Tier 5, OFL is calculated as M * biomass, while ABC = 0.75 * M * biomas...

BACKGROUND Cephalopods play a major role in marine ecosystems, but knowledge of their feeding ecology is limited. In particular, intra- and inter-individual variations in their use of resources has not been adequatly explored, although there is growing evidence that individual organisms can vary considerably in the way they use their habitats and resources. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Usin...
