Global climate variability affects important local hydro-meteorological variables like precipitation and temperature. The Southern Oscillation (SO) is an easily quantifiable major driving force that gives impact on regional and local climate. The relationships between SO and local climate variation are, however, characterized by strongly nonlinear processes. Due to this, teleconnections between...
Probabilistic tractography provides estimates of the probability of a structural connection between points or regions in a brain volume, based on information from diffusion MRI. The ability to estimate the uncertainty associated with reconstructed pathways is valuable, but noise in the image data leads to premature termination or erroneous trajectories in sampled streamlines. In this work we de...
[1] The rate of sea level rise and its causes are topics of active debate. Here we use a delayed response statistical model to attribute the past 1000 years of sea level variability to various natural (volcanic and solar radiative) and anthropogenic (greenhouse gases and aerosols) forcings. We show that until 1800 the main drivers of sea level change are volcanic and solar radiative forcings. F...
Robot manipulators generally rely on complete knowledge of object geometry in order to plan motions and compute successful grasps. However, manipulating real-world objects poses a substantial modelling challenge. New instances of known object classes may vary from learned models. Objects that are not perfectly rigid may appear in new configurations that do not match any of the known geometries....
Chinese dialects-based speaker classification using modern speech technologies is really a challenge, not only because the situation of Chinese dialects is very complicated, but also because acoustic features of utterances convey dialectal information together with extra-linguistic information such as age, gender, speaker, etc. In this paper, we propose a new speaker classification technique us...
This paper presents a statistical model that interprets the evaluation of ranking methods as a random experiment. This model predicts the variability of evaluation results, so that appropriate significance tests for the results can be derived. The paper concludes with an empirical validation of the model on a collocation extraction task.
