A large class of distributed testing, control and collaborative applications are reactive or event driven in nature. Such applications can be structured as a set of handlers that react to events and that in turn can trigger other events. We have developed an application building toolkit that facilitates development of such applications. Our system is based on the concept of Mobile Streams. Appl...

[1] Climate warming and permafrost degradation at high latitudes will likely impact watershed hydrology, and consequently, alter the concentration and character of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in northern rivers. We examined seasonal variation of DOC chemistry in 16 streams of the Yukon River basin, Alaska. Our primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between source water (shallow ve...

We investigated whether fish assemblage structure in southern Appalachian streams differed with historical and contemporary forest cover. We compared fish assemblages in 2(nd)-4(th) order streams draining watersheds that had increased forest cover between 1950 and 1993 (i.e., reforesting watersheds). We sampled fish in 50 m reaches during August 2001 and calculated catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) ...

Benthic macroinvertebrates are sampled in streams and rivers as one of the assessment elements of the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Rivers and Streams Assessment. In a 2006 report, the recommendation was made that different yet comparable methods be evaluated for different types of streams (e.g., low gradient vs. high gradient). Consequently, a research element was added to the ...

We study rational streams (over a field) from a coalgebraic perspective. Exploiting the finality of the set of streams, we present an elementary and uniform proof of the equivalence of four notions of representability of rational streams: by finite dimensional linear systems; by finite stream circuits; by finite weighted stream automata; and by finite dimensional subsystems of the set of streams.

We use a new discretization technique to solve the higher-order thermomechanically coupled equations of glacier evolution. We find that under radially symmetric continuum equations, small perturbations in symmetry due to the discretization are sufficient to produce the initiation of nonsymmetric thermomechanical instabilities which we interpret as ice streams, in good agreement with previous st...

A moderately deep and rather wide artificial neural net is applied in phoneme recognition of noisy speech. The net is formed by first estimating posterior probabilities of phonemes in 21 band-limited streams covering the whole speech spectrum. These 21 band-limited streams are subdivided into three seven band-limited stream subsets, by differently sub-sampling the original 21 band-limited strea...

Data streams are massive, fast-changing, and infinite. Applications of data streams can vary from critical scientific and astronomical applications to important business and financial ones. They need algorithms to make a single pass with limited time and memory. Mining data streams is concerned with extracting knowledge structures represented in models and patterns in non-stopping data streams....

Clustering data streams has found a few important applications. While many previous studies focus on clustering objects arriving in a data stream, in this paper, we consider the novel problem of on demand clustering concept drifting data streams. In order to characterize concept drifting data streams, we propose an effective method to estimate densities of data streams. One unique feature of ou...

A prototype multi-stream system with a performance monitor for stream selection is proposed to recognize speech in unknown noise. The speech signal is decomposed into seven band-limited streams. Posterior probabilities of phonemes are estimated by a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) in each of these band-limited streams. Estimated posterior vectors of all 127 combinations (processing streams) of the...
