We study the question of polytopality of graphs: when is a given graph the graph of a polytope? We first review the known necessary conditions for a graph to be polytopal, and we present three families of graphs which satisfy all these conditions, but which nonetheless are not graphs of polytopes. Our main contribution concerns the polytopality of Cartesian products of non-polytopal graphs. On ...
We give a characterization of DFS cotree-critical graphs which is central to the linear time Kuratowski finding algorithm implemented in PIGALE (Public Implementation of a Graph Algorithm Library and Editor [2]) by the authors, and deduce a justification of a very simple algorithm for finding a Kuratowski subdivision in a DFS cotree-critical graph. Communicated by: P. Mutzel and M. Jünger; subm...
The edge-bandwidth of a graph is the minimum, over all labelings of the edges with distinct integers, of the maximum difference between labels of two incident edges. We prove that edgebandwidth is at least as large as bandwidth for every graph, with equality for certain caterpillars. We obtain sharp or nearly sharp bounds on the change in edge-bandwidth under addition, subdivision, or contracti...
We show that finding roots of Boolean matrices is an NPhard problem. This answers a twenty year old question from semigroup theory. Interpreting Boolean matrices as directed graphs, we further reveal a connection between Boolean matrix roots and graph isomorphism, which leads to a proof that for a certain subclass of Boolean matrices related to subdivision digraphs, root finding is of the same ...
The generating function formalism is used to analyze the continuity properties of univariate ternary subdivision schemes. These are compared with their binary counterparts.
It is proved that the critical cells of a discrete Morse function in the sense of Forman on a finite regular CW complex can always be detected by a polyhedral Morse function in the sense of Banchoff on an appropriate embedding in Euclidean space of the barycentric subdivision of the complex. The proof is stated in terms of discrete Morse functions on a class of posets that is slightly broader t...
The conjecture concerning the characterization of a convergent univariate subdivision algorithm with nonnegative finite mask is confirmed.
We show that an ’almost strong Lefschetz’ property holds for the barycentric subdivision of a shellable complex. From this we conclude that for the barycentric subdivision of a CohenMacaulay complex, the h-vector is unimodal, peaks in its middle degree (one of them if the dimension of the complex is even), and that its g-vector is an M -sequence. In particular, the (combinatorial) g-conjecture ...
We propose two adaptations of linear Hermite subdivisions schemes to operate on manifold-valued data based on a Log-exp approach and on projection, respectively. Furthermore, we introduce a new proximity condition, which bounds the difference between a linear Hermite subdivision scheme and its manifold-valued analogue. Verification of this condition gives the main result: The manifold-valued He...
This paper generalizes adaptive subdivision algorithms by introducing an applicationdependent Degree of Interest function. Therefore, geometry-related as well as geometry-independent properties can be integrated to control the subdivision algorithm in a uniform framework. We demonstrate how three different applications benefit from this notion.
