This paper presents an overview of some techniques and concepts coming from dynamical system theory and used for the analysis of dynamical neural networks models. In a first section, we describe the dynamics of the neuron, starting from the Hodgkin-Huxley description, which is somehow the canonical description for the " biological neuron ". We discuss some models reducing the Hodgkin-Huxley mod...
This paper presents our application of a visualization tool and optimization model based on mixed-integer linear programming to solve a workforce staffing and scheduling problem at Sabena Technics, a major aircraft maintenance company in Belgium. We used the software to generate many alternative, cost-efficient schedules and to analyze multiple scenarios. In several management meetings, stakeho...
Serum containing normal and abnormal levels of alkaline phosphatase activity were assayed for total enzyme activity, then fractionated by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membranes for 20 mm. The new substrate, phenolphthalein monophosphate, was employed to locate the isoenzymes on the cellulose acetate membranes and to measure their activity by eluting and scanning procedures. The sensitiv...
The use of minimally invasive technics in cardiac surgery has become widely discussed, aiming improvements not only in the aesthetics aspects but also better functional results. In this report, we present a case of a patient with severe mitral stenosis that underwent successful video-assisted minimally invasive mitral valve replacement.
In the four previous parts of this series of articles, level measurement using a floating system, using pressure instruments, using radar waves and using ultrasonic waves were discussed. The instruments offered by Indumart company applicable for each method were also recommended. In the final part of this article, level measurement using capacitance, conductivity probes, vibration forks, therma...
A concept of the ventricular gradient as a quantity which varies with time during the cardiac cycle is presented. Some methods for deriving values of the "mean instantaneous ventricular gradient" and from these the "vector-cardiogram of the gradient" are outlined. Despite obvious shortcomings in these technics, some results of the application of these methods are reported.
