We prove that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of primes. There are three major ingredients. The first is Szemerédi’s theorem, which asserts that any subset of the integers of positive density contains progressions of arbitrary length. The second, which is the main new ingredient of this paper, is a certain transference principle. This allows us to deduce from Szemerédi’s theo...

Thesis supervison can bring to light unresolved and new psychological issues for both supervisors and students. What makes thesis supervision especially difficult is that supervisors have no officiai mandate to deal with disruptive psychological processes. In fact, there are prohibitions against such interpersonal involvement. Those supervisors who move beyond the borders of traditional, ration...

PURPOSE The paraxial propagation of astigmatic wavefronts through astigmatic optical systems can be described by the augmented step-along method (ASAM). Its equivalence to the linear ray optics approach is considered in detail. METHODS The ASAM is exploited to derive paraxial ray paths through a general coaxial astigmatic system. RESULTS Starting from the information inherent in the ASAM al...

BACKGROUND The concept of transference has broadened to a recognition that patients often express enduring relational patterns in the therapeutic relationship. AIMS To examine the structure of patient relational patterns in psychotherapy and their relation with DSM-IV personality disorder symptoms. We determined the levels of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and tail butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities in tadpoles of Odontophrynus americanus exposed to a commercial formulation of fenitrothion. The mean brain AChE activities in the controls tadpoles varied from 6.91 to 6.39 micromol min(-1) mg(-1) protein, whereas tail BChE activities ranged among 0.26 to 0.17 micromol min(-1) mg(-1) ...

A new type of solid lithium-ion conducting electrolytes prepared by incorporation of Li(+) ions into a cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6])-based organic molecular porous solid shows high Li(+) ion conductivity (∼10(-4) S cm(-1)) and mobility (transference numbers, tLi(+) = 0.7-0.8). In addition, the solid electrolytes show excellent, thermally stable performance even after several temperature cycles.

The aim of this paper is to show the important role played by lexical choices in translation, considered not only as a means of rendering a direct equivalent in the target language, but also a means of manipulation motivated by the target reader's demands. We will present the new conception of the lexicón provided by the Functional-Lexematic Model in order to analyze, later, the advantages of t...

The understanding of nature is a continuous process that requires the transference of current knowledge to future generations. In this NeuroView, we address the critical issue of training of future scientists, an essential aspect of scientific progress. As an example of the impact training programs can have on shaping future scientists, we focus on the experience of the Grass Laboratory, which ...

Let μ be a Gibbs measure of the doubling map T of the circle. For a μ-generic point x and a given sequence {rn} ⊂ R, consider the intervals (Tx − rn (mod 1), Tx + rn (mod 1)). In analogy to the classical Dvoretzky covering of the circle we study the covering properties of this sequence of intervals. This study is closely related to the local entropy function of the Gibbs measure and to the hitt...
