Given a finite set of patterns, i.e., subsets of ZZ. What is the best way to place translates of them in such a way that every point belongs to at least one translate and no two points belong to the same set of translates? We give some general results, and investigate the particular case when there is only a single pattern and that pattern is a square or has size at most four.

We prove that for any 4 points in the plane that belong to 2 parallel lines, there is no linear dependence between the associated time-frequency translates of any nontrivial Schwartz function. If mild Diophantine properties are satisfied, we also prove linear independence in the category of L2(R) functions.

We provide a general setting for studying admissible and singular translates of measures on linear spaces. We apply our results to measures on D[0, 1]. Further, we show that in many cases convex, balanced, bounded, and complete subsets of the admissible translates are compact.
