Modification of a Perkin-Elmer 603 atomic absorption spectrophotometer by adding a high-intensity tungsten-halogen lamp for background correction significantly improved the detection limit for elements that have analytical wavelengths in the near-ultraviolet and visible regions. Chromium in human serum and urine can be measured, with a simplified sample-handling technique, in concentrations of ...

Optical, infrared and ultraviolet observations of GRB fields have allowed detection of counterparts and host galaxies of the high energy transients, thus crucially contributing to our present knowledge of the GRB phenomenon. Measurements of afterglow variable emission, polarized light, redshifted absorption and emission line spectra, as well as host galaxies brightnesses and colors have clarifi...

Ultraviolet sources with output wavelengths or 254, 300, and 366 nm were compared for detection of ethidium bromide-DNA complexes in acrylamide gels. The 254and 300-nni sources were both much more sensitive than the 366-nni source. The 254-nni .source produced a great deal of photodamage, photonickingand photodimerization, and photobleaching, while the longer wavelength sources cause little dam...

Diamond photoconductive detectors have previously been shown to be suitable for detection of deep ultraviolet nanosecond-scale pulses from excimer lasers, which are to be used in next generation lithographic systems. Using simple test circuitry and low bias voltages easily measurable responses were observed when these detectors were illuminated with laser pulses at typical laser fluence levels....

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, and solar ultraviolet ray exposure is the most significant risk factor for its development. The plantar foot is infrequently exposed to the sun, thus the presence of BCC on the sole is rare. We report a case of BCC on the sole of the foot and its treatment in the hope to facilitate its detection.

A novel multi-mode probe consisting of a hexaphenyl-1,3-butadiene derivative, 2,2'-((((1Z,3Z)-1,2,3,4-tetraphenylbuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))dimalononitrile (ZZ-HPB-CN), with typical aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) features was easily prepared for the highly sensitive and rapid detection of amine vapors. The ZZ-HPB-CN sensor, which was prepared by simply ...

The application of an ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diode (LED) to on-line sample concentration/fluorescence detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE) is described. The utility of a UV-LED (peak emission wavelength at 380 nm, approximately 2 mW) for fluorescence detection was demonstrated by examining both a naturally fluorescent (riboflavin) compound and a nonfluorescent compound (tryptoph...

We report the discovery of Ge III λ1088.46 in the planetary nebulae (PNe) SwSt 1, BD+303639, NGC 3132, and IC 4593, observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. This is the first astronomical detection of this line and the first measurement of Ge (Z = 32) in PNe. We estimate Ge abundances using S and Fe as reference elements, for a range of assumptions about gas-phase depletions. T...

We describe a new concept in continuously referenced monitoring of the isoenzyme activities of creatine kinase (EC 2.7.3.2) after liquid-chromatographic separation. After separation on a diethylaminoethyl-Sephacel column, the three isoenzymes of creatine kinase undergo a series of coupled enzyme reactions, ultimately resulting in the formation of ultraviolet-detectable NADPH. A major advantage ...

In this HPLC-diode-array detection method for toxicological drug screening, a mixed-mode solid-phase extraction procedure is optimized for isolation of a broad range of drugs from serum and urine. Basic, neutral, and weakly acidic drugs are uniformly recovered. The extract from the solid-phase cartridge is readily injected to a reversed-phase HPLC column for separation by gradient elution. Unkn...
