OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy and safety of the laparoscopic management of an impacted distal ureteric stone in a bilharzial ureter, as bilharzial ureters are complicated by distal stricture caused by the precipitation of bilharzial ova in the distal ureter. These cases are associated with poorly functioning and grossly hydronephrotic kidneys that hinder the endoscopic manipulation of the...

BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2013009115 DESCRIPTION Duplicated ureter is a congenital condition in which the ureteric bud, the embryological origin of the ureter, splits resulting in two ureters draining a single kidney (figure 1). It is the most common renal abnormality, occurring in approximately 1% of the...
UNLABELLED Primary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the kidney is rare, and it shows distinct undifferentiated tumor cells and well differentiated cartilagenous components. Also assident infiltrating urothelial carcinoma of the ureter is an extremely rare cancer. We report a case of primary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma occurring in the left kidney with an ipsilateral and distinct distal ureteric imp...
A 31-year-old female with a 19-year history of chronic urinary tract infections, intermittent hematuria, and associated flank pain was referred to our service for evaluation and treatment. Increasing frequency and severity of the infections prompted the following diagnostic studies to elucidate the etiology of the patient’s condition: abdominal and pelvic computed tomography scans, intravenous ...
BACKGROUND Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) is a fatal cancer-related pulmonary complication with rapidly progressing dyspnea and pulmonary hypertension that occasionally induces sudden death. We report the first case of PTTM induced by ureter carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION The patient was an 80-year-old Japanese female with chief complaints of dry cough and dyspnea. An echocar...
PURPOSE We evaluated the effectiveness and safety of holmium: YAG laser lithotripsy with a semirigid ureteroscope for ureteral calculi in a prospective cohort of 697 patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Holmium: YAG laser lithotripsy was performed with a semirigid ureteroscope in 697 inpatients between September 2002 and January 2006. Calculi were located in the distal ureter in 382 patients (54.8%...
INTRODUCTION Pelvic lipomatosis is a benign proliferation of adipose tissue predominantly in the pelvic retroperitoneum. Involvement of the bladder and ureter may cause bilateral hydroureteronephrosis and low capacity bladder.(1) We present the case report of a patient with pelvic lipomatosis causing bilateral hydroureteronephrosis with low capacity bladder managed by laparoscopy assisted ‘U’ c...
Ectopic ureter and ureterocele are rare congenital anomalies. As such, are seldom encountered incidentally during urologic surgery. We present a case illustrating an unforeseen encounter of an ectopic ureter with an associated ureterocele during a robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and the surgical technique used to adapt to the anatomical variation.
Primary adenocarcinomas of the renal pelvis and ureter are rare and account for less than 1% of all malignancies at this site. We report a case of primary papillary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ureter that clinically mimicked genitourinary tuberculosis. Early diagnosis is important for the better outcome.
The present study was undertaken to elucidate the kidney- and site-selective delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) following kidney surface application in rats. We selected an experimental system utilizing a cylindrical diffusion cell attached to the right kidney surface. After 5-FU was applied to this surface, approximately 60% was absorbed in 180 min. A semi-log plot of the remaining amount of 5-...
