This study has been conducted between years 2002-2008 in nearby Egirdir lake, which is acknowledged to be amongst the biggest fresh water lakes in Turkey. Within the scope of this study observations have been made on one of the cat species common in Turkey, Jungle Cat Felis chaus, its biology distribution, population size, behavior and food in their habitat as well as problems conceming its con...

The Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method for solving hyperbolic conservation laws is a high order finite element method, which utilizes the useful features from high resolution finite volume schemes, such as the exact or approximate Riemann solvers, TVD Runge–Kutta time discretizations, and limiters. In this paper, we investigate using the RKDG finite element method for compressible...

Sydney’s water supply is under great pressure as the demand continues to rise. Demand mitigation strategies have had some success, but domestic consumption remains high. This paper discusses the attitudes of households to their water consumption in a search for ways in which domestic demand for water may be reduced. Evidence on attitudes of households in different kinds of housing was obtained ...

Flies of the genus Drosophila inhabit a wide range of habitats, from the tropics to deserts to boreal forests. The primary physiological mechanism allowing Drosophila and other insects to survive in arid habitats is a reduction in rates of water loss. To understand mechanisms of water retention in greater detail, we investigated the three main routes by which Drosophila lose water: excretion, c...

We consider the long-time behavior of the entropy solution of a first-order scalar conservation law on a Riemannian manifold. In the case of the Torus, we show that, under a weak property of genuine non-linearity of the flux, the solution converges to its average value in L, 1 ≤ p < +∞. We give a partial result in the general case.

One of the central tenets of behavioral ecology is that features of the environment shape animal behavior (Krebs and Davies, 1997). The abundance and distribution of alternative food sources determines optimal patterns of diet choice just as the abundance and distribution of females affect themating behavior of males. When food is widely scattered and travel from a central place to find it is le...

We perform large-scale simulations of directed sandpile models with both deterministic and stochastic toppling rules. Our results show the existence of two distinct universality classes. We also provide numerical simulations of directed models in the presence of bulk dissipation. The numerical results indicate that the way in which dissipation is implemented is irrelevant for the determination ...

We examine the conservation status of Africa’s “Big Five”: lion, leopard, buffalo, black and white rhinoceros and elephant, and the role of behavioral knowledge in their conservation. Efforts to conserve these flagship species consist of in situ conservation, captive breeding and reintroductions. With a few exceptions, we find limited evidence that knowledge of behavior informs conservation pro...

Conducting a barriers analysis is an important first step when designing proenvironmental behavior change interventions. Yet, detailed information on common barriers to energy conservation campaigns remains unavailable. Using a pair of original surveys, we leverage the theory of planned behavior to report on the most important barriers for fourteen energy conservation behaviors common in univer...
