A collaborative study was undertaken at two institutions to assess the performance of a direct fluorescent-antibody stain for the detection of Pneumocystis carinii in respiratory specimens from patients with known or suspected human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infections. A total of 163 specimens (125 induced sputa, 37 bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, and 1 tracheal aspirate) from 124 patients ...

this study purported to compare and contrast the use of self-mention and evidentials as two mtadiscourse features in opinion columns of persian and english newspapers. the theoretical basis of this study is the idea that metadiscourse features vary across cultural boundaries. for this purpose, 150 persian and 150 english opinion columns were collected based on three factors of topic, audience a...

We compared a nested PCR assay and microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained blood films for detection and identification of Plasmodium spp. in blood specimens. PCR was more sensitive than microscopy and capable of identifying malaria parasites at the species level when microscopy was equivocal.

Chromosomal aberrations are of great concern in dairy animals worldwide as they are usually associated with reduced fertility or infertility. There are multiple reasons which may cause chromosomal aberrations during mitosis and meiosis. To understand the probable cause of aberrations, a simple study was performed during induced lymphocyte culture. The lymphocyte cultures were setup using the bl...

BACKGROUND The mainstay of diagnosis of relapsing fever (RF) is demonstration of the spirochetes in Giemsa-stained thick blood smears, but during non fever periods the bacteria are very scanty and rarely detected in blood smears by microscopy. This study is aimed to evaluate the sensitivity of different methods developed for detection of low-grade spirochetemia. METHODS Animal blood samples w...

Microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood smears remains the gold standard method used to quantify and stage malaria parasites. However, this technique is tedious, and requires trained microscopists. We have developed a fast and simple flow cytometry method to quantify and stage, various malaria parasites in red blood cells in whole blood or in vitro cultured Plasmodium falciparum. T...

A 'two-objective, one-area' method and related equations are suggested to measure absorbance of microscopic stained objects. In such work, the measuring field invariably includes an image of the object and some clear area surrounding the image. The total intensity in the two areas is measured photometrically, using two different objectives, and substituted in the equation for absorbance. The eq...

A total of 15 morphological abnormalities characteristic of dyserythropoiesis were evaluated in bone marrow smears stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa stain. Abnormalities were classified as: (a) anomalies of the nucleus (binuclearity, multinuclearity, nuclear lobulation, budding, fragmentation, chromatin lumping and pyknosis, intranuclear bridging, extrusion of the nucleus); and (b) anomalies of ...
