The effects of orography on the precipitation field in the Spanish Mediterranean zone are studied through numerical simulations from a climatological point of view. The main atmospheric patterns that produce significant precipitation in the considered area, derived in a previous study, have been used as input data. The numerical simulations have been performed using the HIRLAM model. We isolate...

A new species of deep-water crab, Paragalene danieleae (Progeryonidae), from the western Atlantic is described and illustrated. The new species can be easily separated from its eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean counterpart, P. longicrura (Nardo, 1868), by a suite of carapace and appendage characters.

The main scientific goal of COSTAS project is to bring useful knowledge to the understanding of the conditions, which favor the accumulation and transfer of organic and metallic contaminants at the primary trophic levels (autotrophes and hetetrophes), and then within the food web of small pelagic fish (anchovy and sardine) in the Gulf of Lion, Western Mediterranean.

West Nile virus (WNV) reemerged in Morocco in September 2003, causing an equine outbreak. A WNV strain isolated from a brain biopsy was completely sequenced. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses, Moroccan WNV strains isolated during the 1996 and 2003 outbreaks were closely related to other strains responsible for equine outbreaks in the western Mediterranean basin.

To determine the lineage of West Nile virus that caused outbreaks in Italy in 2008 and 2009, several West Nile virus strains were isolated from human specimens and sequenced. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses, the strains isolated constitute a distinct group within the western Mediterranean cluster.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES There is wide recognition of the importance of healthy eating in cardiovascular health promotion. The purpose of this study was to identify the main dietary patterns among a Spanish population, and to determine their relationship with plasma lipid profiles. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of data from 1290 participants of the Aragon Workers Health ...

Numerical model scenarios of future climate depict a global increase in temperatures and changing precipitation patterns, primarily driven by increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations. Aerosol particles also play an important role by altering the Earth’s radiation budget and consequently surface temperature. Here, we use the general circulation aerosol model ECHAM5-HAM, coupled to a mixed ...

We employed a novel method that combined probabilistic analysis and spatial modeling assisted by GIS to analyze the risk of extreme precipitation in Northeast Spain related to three atmospheric circulation configurations: the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Mediterranean Oscillation, and Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The analysis was performed at an event-based scale using data ob...

BACKGROUND Different dietary patterns have been associated with several health outcomes, including morbidity and mortality. There is little evidence on the association between empirically derived dietary patterns and all-cause mortality in Southern European populations. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to prospectively evaluate the association between an empirically derived dietary pattern ...

6 [1] Using sea surface temperature (SST), precipitation, and atmospheric information, this 7 statistical study revisits the questions of the July–September SST‐Sahel teleconnection 8 variability after removing impact of quasi‐global SSTs over the period 1900–2008. The 9 eastern Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean dominate the relationship, both in terms of 10 intensity and time stability, with ...
