duty vehicles are amazing artifacts, made by the world's largest industry and fueled by the second-largest. American automakers make a new light vehicle every 2 seconds. Cheaper per kilogram than a fast-food hamburger, those vehicles meet conflicting requirements for performance, emissions, fuel economy, esthetics, and safety with remarkable skill. Yet, a typical light vehicle releases its own ...

Inch-worm motors achieve high linear displacements with high forces while dissipating low power. Design of a wheel to achieve angular displacement from inch-worm motors is described. Test structures are then suggested to measure unknown parameters and determine how best to build wheels for a microvehicle. Conclusions and future work are then discussed.

Resonance patterns have been observed in 2D solid-state NMR spectra of the transmembrane segment of M2 protein from Influenza A virus in oriented samples reflecting the helical wheel of this alpha-helix. The center of this pattern uniquely defines the helical tilt with respect to the bilayer normal without a need for resonance assignments. The distribution of resonances from amino acid specific...

Abstract: This paper proposes a regenerative braking control strategy based on real-time dynamic loading (RTDL) of wheels. Based on the nonlinear relationship between a spring’s resilience and displacement, this paper establishes 7-degrees of freedom (DOF) full vehicle model with nonlinear suspension. Then, a method based on suspension deformation is devised to calculate the wheels’ dynamic loa...

This paper describes a hybrid mobility system that combines the advantages of both legged and wheeled locomotion. The legs of the hybrid mobility system permit it to surmount obstacles and navigate difficult terrain, while the wheels allow efficient locomotion on prepared surfaces and provide a reliable passive mechanism for supporting the weight of the vehicle. We address the modeling, analysi...

One common mobile robot design consists of three ‘omniwheels’ arranged at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, with wheel axles aligned with the rays from the center of the triangle to each wheel. Omniwheels, like standard wheels, are driven by the motors in a direction perpendicular to the wheel axle, but unlike standard wheels, can slip in a direction parallel to the axle. Unlike a steere...

Abstract. The objective of this paper is to develop a hybrid scheme (nonlinear observer and fuzzy decision making) for fault detection and isolation (FDI) in the reaction wheels of a satellite. Specifically, the goal is to decide whether a bus voltage fault, a current fault or a temperature fault has occurred in one of the three reaction wheels and further to localize which fault has occurred. ...

A wheel in a graph G(V, E) is an induced subgraph consisting of an odd hole and an additional node connected to all nodes of the hole. In this paper, we study the wheels of the column intersection graph of the OLS polytope (PI). These structures induce valid inequalities for this polytope, which are facet defining for its set packing relaxation. Our work builds on simple structural properties o...

In the drinking water and air pollution fields, odour quality characterisation and intensity of each odour characteristic needs to be developed to evaluate the causes of the odours present. Drinking water quality characterisation has matured to the point where an "odour wheel" is described and the primary chemicals producing the odour are known and therefore a potential treatment can be defined...

The paper deals with the modeling and control strategies of the motion of wheeled mobile robots. The model of the vehicle has two driving wheels and the angular velocities of the two wheels are independently controlled. First, the vehicle kinematics model and the control strategies using a feedforward compensator are analyzed. Second, fuzzy reactive control of a mobile robot motion in an unknow...
